CLERMONT, FL- The Georgian Court University softball squad concluded a challenging 2011 journey to the Sunshine State with a 10-8 triumph over American International College Saturday afternoon to end the NTC Spring Games with a 3-9 record. The Lions fell to #11 Winona State University, 7-1, earlier in the day, one of four games GCU played vs. nationally-ranked teams during the week.
GAME ONE
The Lions and #11 Warriors played four innings of scoreless softball before Winona State exploded for five runs in the top of the fifth, capped by a three-run homer from clean-up hitter
Kim Wachholder (Jr.-Salem, WI). GCU's lone run came in the bottom of the fifth inning, courtesy of a
Jess Comiskey single.
Brooke Hull fell to 2-6 with the loss, allowing 12 hits in the complete game effort.
Winona State improved to 5-0 with the victory.
GAME TWO
A four-run top of the fifth for Georgian Court erased an 8-6 advantage for AIC and solidified a 10-8 win for the Lions. Hull's two-run single, and a Comiskey ribbie single and steal of home by 2B
Rachel Ruch provided the tying and go-ahead tallies.
3B
Kelsey Cutler belted a  solo home run to left, her second of the season, to give GCU a temporary 3-2 lead in the third inning. Cutler (2-for-4, R, RBI), DH
Courtney Cuevas (2-for-4, RBI), LF
Melissa DePalma (2-for-4, R) and Ruch (2-for-3 , 3 R, 2 RBI) enjoyed multi-hit games while Hull drove in three runs to help her cause. She would also earn the pitching decision to improve to 3-6.
The game was marred by horrific defense as both teams combine for 12 errors led by AIC's seven. The Yellow Jackets fell to 0-2 with the defeat.
The Lions return to action Saturday with a non-conference doubleheader at #19 Dowling College. First pitch is scheduled for 12 PM.
