LAKEWOOD, NJ- The Georgian Court University softball squad capped off a perfect 6-0 week and reached the .500 mark (18-18, 10-4 CACC) for the first time in 2011 as the Lions swept Dominican College 3-1 and 7-6 Saturday afternoon in a rematch of the 2010 CACC Championship Finals.
The victory gives GCU a season-high seven-game winning streak, the club's longest such streak since winning eight straight, commencing with a first round victory over Holy Family University in the 2009 CACC Tournament and ending with a  game two defeat to LeMoyne College in the NCAA Division II Super Regionals.
A three-run home run into a driving wind off the bat of 3B
Sammie Jo Garofalo (2-for-3, R) in the bottom of the fifth inning of the opener evaporated a 1-0 Dominican lead and gave the Lions all the offense they needed to solidify the 3-1 victory.
The Lady Chargers (21-13, 11-5 CACC) initially went up in the top of the third on a RBI double to left-center from
C Ashley Corrao (So.-Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) that brought in
CF Deidre Jeppson (Jr.-Sylmar, CA/Birmingham) who had reached on an error earlier in the frame.
Diana Sansevera went the distance for GCU to improve to 6-4 in the circle, yielding just one unearned run on four hits and a walk. She also struck out five.
Dominican ace
Katrina Pistilli (Jr.-Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) suffered the defeat as she permitted three runs on four hits and three walks to along with six K's.
In the night cap, the Lady Chargers, after scoring a run in each of the first three innings of the game, held a slim 3-2 advantage until the Lions erupted for two scores in the fifth and three more in the sixth to take what seemed to be a commanding lead.
The visitors would not make it easy for GCU, however, as Corrao made it very interesting when she launched a one out,  three-run dinger to make it 7-6. GCU starter
Shannon Dukes showed some mettle and was able to retire two more hitters after that blemish to secure the win for her team, as well as her eighth consecutive victory (8-5). Dukes yielded six runs (5 ER) while permitting ten hits and a walk in the complete-game effort. She also struck out five.
The deciding blow for the Georgian Court offense came on a bases-clearing, three-run two-bagger to right-center from C
Kelsey Cutler (2-for-4, R) in the bottom of the sixth.
Delaney Childers (So.-Johnstown, OH/Johnstown-Monroe) was saddled with the defeat, allowing seven runs (3 ER) on seven hits and four walks. The southpaw also struck out four Lions.
2B
Rachel Ruch went 1-for-3 with a double, but scored four runs on the day as she worked out four bases-on-balls. LF
Christina Masitti earned a 2-for-3 effort with two runs scored on the afternoon.
The Lions get a much deserved break as they do not return to action until this Tuesday when they travel to Goldey-Beacom College for another CACC double-dip.
