Senior Day Highlights Otherwise Difficult Afternoon for GCU Softball ... Swept by New Haven

LAKEWOOD, NJ- On a day the Georgian Court University softball squad celebrated its five seniors with its annual Senior Day, the highlights were reserved for the pregame festivities as the Lions were kept scoreless in a 2-0, 8-0 sweep by the visiting University of New Haven Friday afternoon.

GCU honored the splendid collegiate careers of Jess Comiskey, Courtney CuevasMelissa DePalma, Sammie Jo Garofalo and Diana Sansevera.

The Chargers (28-15) scored two unearned runs with two outs in the first inning on a dropped pop up off the bat of C Brooke Fisher (Fr.-Erial, NJ)  to take a 2-0 lead. New Haven hurler Micah Stonesifer (Jr.-Wichita Falls, TX)  would make sure that advantage would hold as she held Georgian Court (25-21) to only two hits in seven innings while walking one and striking out five. She improved to 14-8.

Georgian Court starter, Sansevera, was well in control after that initial inning as she scattered seven hits and zero earned runs in seven frames. She also struck out five. Her record drops to 10-5.

New Haven was in charge right from the beginning in game two as the plated single runs in the first, second, fifth and sixth innings and a four-spot in the third frame to put away the home team in six innings, 8-0.

The Lions could muster only three hits in the nightcap for starter Shannon Dukes, who permitted six runs (4 ER) on seven hits and two walks in three innings of work. Dukes (11-7) also struck out three in the showing.

Stonesifer relieved starting pitcher Keri Tricinelli (So.-Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) with two outs in the first and went on to hurl 5.1 innings (2 H, BB, 5 K) of scoreless ball to earn her second victory of the afternoon.

GCU hits the road Saturday afternoon for a CACC twin-bill at Wilmington University commencing at 1:00 PM.
