GARDEN CITY, NY- The Georgian Court University softball squad, on a raw, blustery Tuesday afternoon, traveled to Adelphi University where they garnered a split in non-conference action.
The Lions (10-16) fell in the opener, 6-3, on a walk-off, three-run home run from Adelphi pinch-hitter
Maria Canino (Sr.-Huntington, NY), but rebounded in the nightcap with seventh-inning solo homers from
Brooke Hull and
Kelsey Cutler, and another stellar pitching performance from hurler
Shannon Dukes, as GCU secured a 2-1 triumph.
Dukes (3-5) and Adelphi pitchers
Paige Rhodes (So.-Corona, CA) (2.0 IP, 5H, 0 R) and
Katie Andrews (Fr.-Dothan, AL) (5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 7K) traded goose eggs for six full innings before Hull and Cutler went back-to-back in the top of the seventh.
A solo homer from SS
Jeanine Leo (So.-Staten Island, NY) in the the bottom of the frame put a scare into the Lions, but the Panthers could not inch any closer. Andrews suffered the defeat for Adelphi.
Diana Sansevera was tagged with the loss in game one (7.0 IP, 11 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 11 K) as she fell to 3-3 on the year.
Hull's (3-for-7, R, 2 RBI) long ball was her first of the season while Cutler went deep for the fourth time. CF
Jess Comiskey provided a 3-for-7 effort at the top of the GCU lineup with two runs scored.
Adelphi falls to 8-16 on the year.
Georgian Court gets right back at it Wednesday afternoon when they host a CACC twin-bill vs. the University of the Sciences, commencing at 3PM.
