LAKEWOOD, NJ- The Georgian Court University bats only mustered seven hits all afternoon, but still walked away with two victories Sunday, sweeping first-place Concordia College 3-2 and 2-1 in a crucial CACC doubleheader. All five GCU runs came via home runs.
C
Kelsey Cutler carried the Lions' offense on her shoulders in the opener, driving in all three of GCU's runs with a two-run home run in the bottom of the third and a go-ahead, solo shot in the sixth (8th and 9th of the year). However, it was a game-ending defensive play by LF
Christina Masitti that saved the day for Georgian Court (28-22, 20-6 CACC).
Concordia catcher,
Laura Brezovsky (So.-Yonkers, NY) led off the top of the seventh with a double into the left-center gap. A one-out single to right field off the bat of LF
Maria DeMartino (Jr.-Staten Island, NY) advanced Brezovsky to third base. SS
Jaime Lorenzo (Eastchester, NY) proceeded to loft a high fly to left field where Masitti caught the ball and fired a strike to a waiting Cutler at home plate, nailing a tagging Brezovsky at the dish for a game-saving double play.
Diana Sansevera won her fourth game of the week and improved 12-5 on the year, allowing two runs on nine hits and a walk, while striking out nine, in the complete-game triumph.
A first inning homer from 3B
Sammie Jo Garofalo (4th of the year) and a second inning long ball from DP #Brooke Hull# (6th of the year) was all the offense the Lions needed in the nightcap en route to the 2-1 victory.
Shannon Dukes (12-8) earned the victory in the circle for Georgian Court, yielding a lone run in five hits and two walks. She also struck out a batter.
The Clippers fall to 22-11 (17-5 CACC) after the defeats.
With the regular-season portion of its calendar completed, the Lions will now set focus on the CACC championship softball tournament, which will commence this Thursday at 10:00 AM. Stay tuned for seedings.
