LAKEWOOD, NJ- After beginning Wednesday afternoon with a joyous pregame ceremony to celebrate the collegiate careers of its six seniors, the Georgian Court University soccer squad survived a late game scare from visiting Goldey-Beacom College, defeating the Lightning, 1-0, and improving to 10-5-1 on the season (8-2 CACC).
The Lions and Lightning (3-12, 1-10 CACC) ended the first half in a scoreless stalemate with the home team holding a shot advantage of 10-1 in the stanza. Someone finally found the back of the net in the 53rd minute (52:11) when
Katie Schieder, who along with teammates
Latifa Kelly,
Denisha Thomas,
Tara Troisi,
Becky Witmer and
Cyn-Dee Wong participated in their final regular season home game, bodychecked a
Farrell Pomponio pass past goalkeeper
Alyssa Vetrano for her second goal of the year.
Georgian Court looked as if they would coast to the 1-0 triumph. However, Goldey-Beacom's
Danielle Semenza made things mighty interesting with about 1:20 to go in the game when she got behind the Lions' defense and unleashed a blast that clanked off the right goal post, missing a dramatic game-tying tally by mere inches.
Casey O'Connor collected two saves in 90:00 of action, securing her 10th win of the season and fourth shutout in goal for Georgian Court. Vetrano suffered the loss for the Lightning, collecting nine saves in the contest.
GCU outshot their guests, 19-3, and held an astounding 13-0 corner kick advantage.
The Lions will now take to the road for their final two regular season matches, commencing at Felician College this Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
