Season Comes to Close as Lions Fall to Top-Seed Wilmington, 4-0, in CACC Semifinals

WATERBURY, Conn. (November 2, 2012) – No. 1 seed Wilmington University and No. 2 seed Philadelphia University each claimed victories in Friday afternoon’s Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women’s Soccer Semifinal action at Municipal Stadium in Waterbury, Conn.

The Wildcats and Rams will square off for the 2012 CACC Women’s Soccer Championship on Sunday, Nov. 4 in a 11:00 a.m. start at Lamoy Field on the campus of Post University.

Wilmington (12-6-2) cruised to a 4-0 win over No. 4 seed Georgian Court (10-8-2) in Friday’s first semifinal contest on the strength of a pair of goals from sophomore Victoria Vasapolli (Burlington, N.J.). 

The Wildcats took a 1-0 advantage at the 12:30 mark on a goal by freshman Chelsea Grace (Palmyra, N.J.).

Vasapolli netted her first score at the 40:27 mark off an assist from Ashley Kroll (Baltimore, Md.) before adding her second just 4:27 into the second half to up the margin to 3-0.

Senior Jenna Quaranta (Baltimore, Md.) accounted for the final margin as she put away a goal on a blast from about 15-yards out with just one second remaining in the match.

Overall, Wilmington out-shot Georgian Court 18-15.  Wildcat goalkeeper Amanda Walters (Baltimore, Md.) made 10 saves en route to the shutout.

Philadelphia (13-7-0) out-lasted No. 3 Caldwell (14-5-0) by a 2-1 count in the second semifinal of the afternoon.

Carla Chmielewski (Glassboro, N.J.) gave the Rams a 1-0 lead just 9:27 into the contest off an assist from Kristen Ferguson (Haddonfield, N.J.). 

The Rams added another score at 49:40 off the foot of Janine Cascio (Kings Park, N.Y.) to increase the advantage to 2-0.  Caldwell trimmed the lead to 2-1 on a goal by Megan Ferrara (Clifton, N.J.) at 70:49, but the Philadelphia defense staved off the Cougars over the final 19:11 to clinch a spot in the conference championship.

Philadelphia out-shot Caldwell 19-8 overall and Rams’ goalkeeper Kelli Kowalewski (Shamong, N.J.) made three saves in securing the victory.
