LAKEWOOD, NJ- The Georgian Court University softball team established a new season-high winning streak with Wednesday's doubleheader sweep of visiting Millersville University, giving the Lions six consecutive victories. GCU dropped the Marauders, 4-0 and 9-4, to improve to 17-13 on the year.
GAME ONE
Georgian Court plated all four of its runs in the second inning on three hits and three costly errors by the Millersvile (9-17). The frame started with a walk to 3B
Kelsey Cutler and an infield hit by RF
Selina Santillo. 2B
Ashlynn Thompson then reached on an error by the Millersville second baseman, which brought in Cutler from second base for GCU's first tally and moved Santillo to third.
Thompson and Santillo then executed a successful double steal with Santillo' s swipe increasing the advantage to 2-0. Millersville's catcher sailed her throw into centerfield, permitting Thompson to advance to third. An RBI infield single by LF
Alyssa Paradiso scored Thompson to make it 3-0. Paradiso would then make her way around the bags on a error from the Millersville shortstop, a
Christina Masitti sacrifice bunt, and a
Rachel Ruch ribbie single to center.
Brooke Hull was magnificent in the circle for the Lions as she yielded just two infield hits and no walks in the complete game effort. The GCU ace also struck out one as she improved to 11-8 on the year.
Sarah Bertoni (4-8) took the Millersville defeat as she allowed four unearned runs on five Georgian Court hits and a walk while striking out five in outing.
GAME TWO
The Lions and Marauders exchanged runs in the both the second and third innings and were deadlocked at 2-all after three frames before GCU attacked with five runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth to secure the 9-4 victory.
Tartaglia blasted her first home run of the year, a two-run shot in the fourth, highlighting a 2-for-3 effort at the dish. CF
Dara Schroeder went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two stolen bases, giving the freshman speedster a CACC-leading 22 swipes on the season.
Ruch delivered two hits in four AB's and contributed a double and three RBI for GCU. Cutler (1-for-3, R) and Thompson (1-for-2, 2B) also delivered RBI hits.
Hull (12-8) also earned the win in the nightcap, allowing four runs (3 ER) on nine hits and a walk in seven innings pitched. She also struck out three.
Millersville's Ashley Cantiello falls to 2-2 with the defeat.
Georgian Court travels to LeMoyne College for a 3:00 PM twin-bill this Friday afternoon, marking the Lions' first trip to Syracuse, NY since falling to the Dolphins in the Super Regionals of the magical 2009 season.
