Top of the Mountain ... Lions Stay Perfect in Florida With Triumphs Over Bemidji, Assumption

Brooke Hull
CLERMONT, FL- The Georgian Court University softball team saw its record improve to 4-0 at the NTC Training Center Games Monday afternoon with solid victories over Bemidji State University (MN) and Assumption College (MA).

GAME ONE

After winning its initial games on Sunday, GCU picked up right where it left off on Tuesday vs. Bemidji State as they skinned the Beavers, 11-1, in a five-inning affair.

The Lions (4-2) immediately pounced on Bemidji starting pitcher Allison Roberts (Fr.-Crystal, MN) in the top of the first inning with four runs, courtesy of RBI doubles from 2B Rachel Ruch and DP Brooke Hull. Hull's smash just missed giving GCU its first home run of the year as it caromed of the top of the center field fence and bounced back into play. RF Selina Santillo and C Christina Masitti also drilled ribbie singles in the opening frame.

After adding another run in the second on a Hull single, the Lions put the contest well out of reach for the Beavers with a third-inning five-spot, making the score 10-0 Georgian Court.

Starting pitcher Illiana Teran improved to 2-1 in the circle as she owned a perfect game until LF Summer Monsrud (Bemidji, MN) led off the bottom of the fourth with a clean single through the middle. Teran would go the distance, yielding one run ( 0 ER) on two hits and two walks. She also struck out three.

Roberts picked up the loss for Bemidji (2.2 IP, 8 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 3 BB, 3 K).

Schroeder continued her torrid start at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs and two stolen bases. Ruch also stayed hot with a 2-for-3 effort, which included three RBI and two runs scored. Hull enjoyed a perfect 3-for-3 while scoring a run and driving in three. 3B Kelsey Cutler also posted a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4 with a RBI.

GAME TWO

The Lions broke a 2-2 stalemate vs. Assumption College with a three-run fifth as Georgian Court held on for a 5-3 victory over the Greyhounds to increase its winning streak to four games.

Assumption jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead off starting pitcher Brooke Hull on a two-run double from 2B Lauren Medeiros (Jr.-Seekonk, MA). GCU answered with a run completely manufactured by Schroeder as reached on an infield single, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a passed ball.

The Lions tied the affair in the home half of the second when Schroeder plated Masitti, who had tripled earlier in the inning.

The score would remain the same until GCU broke it open in the fifth with three runs on five hits, highlighted by an RBI single from SS Ashlynn Thompson (who later scored on a passed ball) and a sacrifice fly from Hull.

Hull (2-1) showed plenty of mettle in the circle for the Lions as she emerged unscathed from a bases-loaded, no out situation in the sixth inning and closed the door on the Greyhounds in the final frame as Assumption had the tying runs in scoring position with one out. Hull finished the complete-game effort allowing three runs on eight hits and three walks. She also struck out two.

Jenn Lattal (So.-Windsor, CT) took the loss for Assumption in five innings of action (10 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K).

Schroeder finished the day going 6-for-7 with four runs scored and five stolen bases. The freshman dynamo is batting .591 (13-for-22) with 11 runs scored and nine swipes in GCU's first six contests.

Cutler enjoyed her second two-hit effort in the nightcap as she went 2-for-3.

GCU looks to keep the momentum going on Tuesday when they play Northern State University (SD) at 1:00 PM followed by a mighty showdown with the #21 team in the country, the University of Tampa, at 3:00 PM.
