Day 3 Dramatics for GCU Softball at NTC Games

Ashlynn Thompson
CLERMONT, FL- Georgian Court University ended up on both sides of drama-filled scenarios Tuesday afternoon at the National Training Center Games as GCU rallied from five runs down in the seventh inning to walk-off Northern State University (SD) before running into a buzz saw hurler named Deanna Henriott (Sr.-St. Petersburg, FL) from #21 University of Tampa.

GAME ONE

Northern State University (5-5), with a comfortable 6-1 lead in the seventh inning, looked to be ready to solidify its sixth victory of the year. However, the Lions, already with three come-from-behind victories on the trip, had anything but defeat on their minds as they proceeded to do the unthinkable and claw their way back with a six-run rally in their final at-bat to walk-off the shell-shocked Wolves, 7-6.

3B Kelsey Cutler initiated the comeback with a one-out double to the right-center field wall. She was immediately plated on RF Selina Santillo's triple to left. C Christina Masitti then reached after being hit by a Kelli Bornander (Sr.-Lakewood, WA)  pitch. Following a strike out to make it two outs, LF Alyssa Paradiso laced a single to left to score Santillo.

With the score now 6-3, Masitti and Paradiso each moved up a place on the paths after a Northern State passed ball. A Dara Schroeder RBI single and an Ashlynn Thompson two-run double tied the contest at 6-6 and chased Bornander from the game.

2B Rachel Ruch promptly welcomed reliever Kami Smesmo (Fr.-St. Peter, MN) with a double to deep center field that easily brought in Thompson with the game-winner.

All nine members of the Lions' line-up had at least one hit, while Schroeder (3-for-4, R, RBI), Thompson (2-for-4, R, 2 RBI), and Ruch (2-for-4, RBI) enjoyed multi-hit efforts.

Brooke Hull improved to 3-1 in the circle with five innings of stellar relief (2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 K) after starter Illiana Teran was chased by the Wolves after yielding five runs in her two innings of work (5 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB).

GAME TWO

It was a blessing all nine Lions earned base hits in the first contest of the afternoon because it would be their final knocks of the day as University of Tampa ace Deanna Henriott baffled GCU and proceeded to throw a seven-inning perfect game, earning the Spartans (18-3) a 4-0 victory.

Henriott, who now owns eight career no-hitters and two perfectos, permitted just three Georgian Court batted balls as she struck 18 of 21 batters.

The Lions had their five-game winning streak snapped with the loss and now owns a 5-3 mark on the young campaign.

Georgian Court takes Wednesday off before returning to action on Thursday vs. Urbana University (3:00 PM) and Cedarville University (5:00 PM).
