CLERMONT, FL- The wins, they keep on coming for the Georgian Court University softball squad as the Lions dropped Urbana University and Cedarville University Thursday afternoon and improve to 7-1 (7-3 overall) at the National Training Center Games.
GAME ONE
The Lions, for the second time this week, defeated the Blue Knights of Urbana University, this time by a score of 2-1. GCU also tarnished the Blue Knights (1-6) by an 11-5 mark on Sunday.
Urbana broke a scoreless tie when they took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning.
C Megan Risner (Sr.-Urbana, OH) ripped a one-out double to right-center, advanced to third on a
Heather Hakola (Jr.-Marysville, OH) single to left-center, and scored on a rare sacrifice pop fly to first base from
3B Ashley Skinner (So.-Beavercreek, OH).
The Lions tied the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth frame when 3B
Kelsey Cutler and RF
Selina Santillo led of the inning with a grounds-rule double to left and an infield single to first base, respectively. The duo promptly pulled off a successful double steal with Cutler sliding home safely on the back end.
The game-winner came in unorthodox fashion an inning later when CF
Dara Schroeder struck out swinging, but reached first base on a throwing error from Risner behind the plate. SS
Ashlynn Thompson would then sacrifice Schroeder to second.
Brooke Hull, after a
Rachel Ruch fly out to right, ripped a base hit to left field that plated the GCU speedster from second base.
Hull (4-2) went the distance in the circle as she yielded the lone Urbana run on five hits and two walks. The Georgian Court ace also struck out four batters, Urbana's
Lauren Anderson (So.-Newark, OH) was tagged with the loss (5.0 IP, ( H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K).
Cutler contributed a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish with two doubles. Santillo went 2-for-3 with a two-bagger of her own.
GAME TWO
The Lions rapped 13 hits and scored in all but one inning as GCU extinguished the Yellow Jackets of Cedarville University, 13-1, in five innings of play. Georgian Court scored one run in the first, three in the second, five in the third, and four in the fifth as they dominated the scoreboard.
Hull was the hitting star in the nightcap has the senior went 4-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Thompson (2-for-2, 3 R, 2 RBI, 2B), Santillo (2-for-3, R, RBI) and 1B Jennifer Tartaglia (2-for-4) enjoyed multi-hit efforts in the rout.
Illiana Teran scattered six hits and walked none in the five-inning affair, improving to 3-1 on the year. She also struck out four.
With the defeat, Cedarville drops to 5-7 on the year.
GCU gets right back at it Friday morning when they take on West Virginia Wesleyan (9-6) at 9:00 AM and Kutztown University (8-0) at 11:00 AM.
