Lakewood, N.J.- Goalkeeper
Tianna Worden pitched a shutout in her first collegiate start and
Laura Nelson booted a 40-yard goal as the Georgian Court University women's soccer squad secured its eighth consecutive season with ten or more victories with a 1-0 non-conference victory over visiting NYIT Tuesday afternoon on Investors Savings Bank Field.
The shutout marks the ninth for GCU's goalie tandem of Worden and Casey O'Connor who own a 0.70 goals-against-average, collectively, in 2013.
The two squads played a scoreless first half with the Bears outshooting the Lions, 5-3, in the stanza. The scoreboard would remain dormant until Nelson's booming blast lit the Lions' scoring column at 74:50, her second of the year.
Overall, GCU (10-3-3) outshot NYIT by a margin of 11-8 and held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Worden (1-0) gathered six saves in the victory while NYIT's
Cassie Betancourt (So.-Syosset, N.Y.) denied seven GCU shots, falling to 1-5 on the year with the defeat.
Sasha Selim (So.-West Hempstead, N.Y.) and
Meghan Stoll (Fr.-Massapequa, N.Y.) led the 5-9-1 Bears with two shots apiece.
GCU returns to conference play this Saturday with a road contest at Caldwell College. Start time is slated for 11:00 a.m.
