GCU Men's Hoops Officially Underway ... Drop 75-58 Decision at Stonehill College

Jalen Robinson
North Easton, Mass.- History was made Saturday evening as the Georgian Court University men's basketball program took the floor for the very first time, playing in the 2013 Stonehill College Tip-off Classic. The Lions fell to the host-Skyhawks, 75-58, in the season debut for both squads.

A Jalen Robinson lay-up seven minutes (13:00) into the contest gave the Lions an early 7-5 advantage. Stonehill (1-0) proceeded to roll out a 14-0 run, capped by a Pierce Cumpstone (So.-Bainbridge Twp., Ohio) three-pointer with 9:05 remaining in the first stanza, giving the Skyhawks a 19-7 lead.

A Clarence Jones three-ball with 7:25 on the clock cut the GCU deficit to 19-14, but the Skyhawks took off on a 22-12 spurt over the final 7+ minutes to go into the locker room with a 39-26 advantage.  A Ryan Logan (Fr.-Fredricktown, Ohio) free throw with 1:39 remaining gave Stonehill a 21-point lead (40-19), the highwater mark of the half.

An Adam Bramanti (So.-Middleton, Mass.) three-pointer with 7:40 left in regulation provided Stonehill with a game-high, 26-point lead at 69-43. The Lions finished strong, however, as GCU closed the affair on a 15-6 run of its own.

Stonehill's Josh Heyliger (So.-Queens, N.Y.) led all players with 15 points, shooting 6-13 from the field and 3-for-5 from beyond the the three-point line. Logan dropped in 14 points to go along with nine rebounds while Bramanti and Cumpstone contributed 10 points each.

Robinson topped Georgian Court with 10 points, which included an 8-for-10 effort from the charity stripe, in 31 minutes. Alex Ramirez provided a balanced attack for the Lions with his nine points and team-high seven rebounds and four assists.

GCU gets right back at it Sunday afternoon on Day Two of the Stonehill Classic as the Lions take on St. Michael's College at 1:00 p.m.
