Lions Drop Doubleheader to Dominican 7-2, 6-3

Lakewood, N.J.-The Georgian Court University softball team fell to visiting Dominican College Sunday afternoon by the score of 7-2 and 6-3 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader that was originally was scheduled to be played last week, March 17.

GAME ONE

The visiting Lady Chargers (7-9, 4-0 CACC) took an initial 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning of Game One after an infield single by C Ashley Corrao (Sr.-Staten Island, N.Y.) and a perfectly executed squeeze bunt by 1B Paige Berzak (Jr.-Cypress, Calif.).

The Lions (8-14, 2-2 CACC) rallied to tie the affair with a run in the home half of the fourth and fifth innings. RF Vanessa Flores got GCU on the board in the fourth with a RBI double over the centerfielder's head. Georgian Court knotted the score at 2-2 after 3B Ashlynn Thompson split the left-center gap with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and trotted home after an errant throw by the Dominican backstop.

The Lady Chargers wasted no time with snapping the stalemate when the visitors dropped a four-spot on the Lions in the top of the sixth frame, highlighted by a Alyssa Schwed (Fr.-Kinnelon, N.J.) ribbie double, a Julie Plante (Jr.-Swansea, Mass.) RBI infield hit and a single up the middle off the bat of Delaney Childers (Sr.-Johnstown, Ohio). Dominican added an unearned run in the seventh inning to secure the victory.

Childers went the distance in the circle for Dominican to improve to 4-5 on the year (7.0 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K). Kristina Morgan took ball for the Lions and suffered the defeat as the GCU junior fell to 3-6 on the campaign (5.1 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB).

C Meghan Sfraga (2-for-4, R) drilled two doubles for Georgian Court.


GAME TWO

Dominican opened the scoring in the nightcap with three runs in the top of the second following a Schwed RBI single and a two-run double by Plante. The Lions immediately answered with two runs in the bottom half of the frame courtesy of a RBI single to left-center by 1B Adriana Cortez and a steal of home by DP Taylor McDonough who originally reached after a crisp single of her own.

After two scoreless frames, the Lady Chargers brought in a run in each of the final three innings to secure a 6-2 advantage and, essentially, the win.

Kimberly Ragazzo (Fr.-Lawrence, N.J.) held the Lions at bay and improved to 2-3 with the complete-game victory (7.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 K). Illiana Teran, who fired a complete-game, 1-0 shutout at Post University the previous day, permitted four runs (3 ER) on nine hits in five innings of action vs. Dominican Sunday. The GCU senior falls to 2-3 with the loss.

Flores (2-for-3, R) and Cortez (2-for-3, RBI) were the hitting stars for the Lions.

Georgian Court travels to Chestnut Hill College Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. for another CACC showdown.
