Lions Denied by Saint Leo University, Cedarville University on Day Three of NTC Games

Clermont, Fla.-The Georgian Court University softball squad dropped two contests Tuesday at the NTC Center, falling 12-1 (5 inn.) to Saint Leo University (Fla.) and 4-3 to Cedarville (Ohio) University as the GCU continue to search for their first victory of 2013.

GAME ONE

It was a Lions showdown in the first contest of the day as the Georgian Court pride took on the Saint Leo University variety. The two squads completed a scoreless initial frame before Saint Leo exploded for five runs in the top of the second inning on just two hits and two costly GCU errors.

Saint Leo (16-7) added another run in the top of the third on a ground out to shortstop to make the score 6-0. The visiting team put the game completely out of reach with a six-spot  in the top of the fourth, highlighted by a three-run homer to left-center from C Kylee Hardesty (Jr.-Bullhead City, Ariz.).

GCU (0-5) plated its lone run in the bottom of the fourth, courtesy of a single to right by 1B Emma Erbig.

Sarah Steiner (Jr.-Sanford, Fla.) earned the win for Saint Leo, improving to 2-1 on the year (4.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 5 K). Georgian Court's Deanna Daluise dropped to 0-2 in the outing (3.1 IP, 7 H, 10 R, 4 ER, 3 BB).

GAME TWO

After not scoring in the top of the first of the nightcap, Georgian Court immediately had a 2-0 deficit in the bottom half as Cedarville manufactured two runs, courtesy of a GCU fielding error and a groundout to second base.

The Lions answered in the top of the second on an Adriana Cortez rip to left field. Cedarville countered with a run in the bottom of the second on another groundout to second base, which brought home SS Rachel Bull (So.-Liverpool, Ill.) after her triple to right led off the inning.

GCU (0-6) cut the Yellow Jackets (6-3) lead to 3-2 in the top of the fourth after an RBI double to left by 2B Justine Mattia. Cedarville again countered in its half of the inning as a sacrifice fly off the bat of  C Kelsey Chapman (Jr.-Townsend, Del.) made the score 4-2.

SS Briana Molino lifted a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth inning to make it 4-3, but that would be as close as the Lions would get in the scorebook.

The Georgian Court bats awoke for ten hits in the game, including a 3-for-3 effort by CF Dara Schroeder and a 2-for-2 showing by LF Alyssa Paradiso.

Cecelia DeBartolo (So.-Cedarville, Ohio) earned the win in the circle for the Yellow Jackets (7.0 IP, 10 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K).

Kristina Morgan (0-3) suffered the defeat for GCU (4.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 1 BB).

After an off day on Wednesday, Georgian Court returns to action on Thursday with contests vs. Assumption College (1:00 p.m.) and Dowling College (3:00 p.m.).
