LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University softball team swept a home non-conference doubleheader today, downing Georgian Court 3-1 and 5-4 (10 innings).
Lock Haven (24-7) got a pair of wins from pitcher Brianna Jennings (Wyalusing, Pa./Wyalusing) and a home run in each game from Nicole Smith (Milton, Pa./Milton) as LHU beat Georgian Court (20-22) 3-1 in game one, before a thrilling 10-inning grudge match in game two, that LHU eventually won, 5-4.
Jennings struck out seven in game one and N. Smith drilled a three-run home run in the bottom of the third, giving The Haven its only runs on the way to its 23rd win of the year.
Dara Schroeder paced the GCU offense in the opener with a 4-for-4 effort at the plate while
Briana Molino and
Taylor McDonough went 2-for-3 at the dish with a two-bagger for both.
Lock Haven jumped on Georgian Court early in game two, as N. Smith hit her second home run of the day. Her two-run shot in the bottom of the first, put LHU up 2-0.
LHU lead 4-0 after six, but the Lions rallied for four runs of their own in the top of the seventh, highlighted by a two-run double from
Taylor McDonough.
Lock Haven put it away however in the bottom of the 10th when Alicia Cacciotti (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) drilled one up the middle, driving in Chelsea Edwards (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) from second for the victory.
N. Smith had another big game in game two. She finished 2-for-2 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Cacciotti was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. GCU's Molino went 3-for-4 with a run and RBI. McDonough, Schroeder and
Vanessa Flores registered two hits for the Lions.
Jennings threw the final 3 and 1/3 innings on the way to her 18th win of the season. She struck out three.
Georgian Court returns home Tuesday afternoon for a CACC twin-bill vs. Holy Family University at 2:30 p.m. The Lions will celebrate Senior Day in a pre-game ceremony as the recognize the collegiate careers of Flores,
Illiana Teran and
Ashlynn Thompson.
