Lakewood, N.J.- On a day they honored its seniors, the Georgian Court University softball squad completed a crucial Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader sweep of Holy Family University, 10-5 and 3-0, to improve to 14-6 in conference play (22-22 overall).
The Lions end the day tied for fourth place in the CACC standings, tied with University of the Sciences. The Tigers, losers of four straight, dip to 10-8 in CACC play (6th place) and 16-20 overall.
Prior to the twin-bill, GCU celebrated the collegiate careers of seniors
Vanessa Flores,
Illiana Teran and
Ashlynn Thompson.
GAME ONE
The Tigers pounced first in game one as the visitors jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second after RBI singles from
Lindsey Iden (Sr.-Rushland, Pa.) and
Erin Corrado (Jr.-Fair Hill, Md.) and a run-scoring double from
AnnMarie Dalton (Jr.-Northampton, Pa.).
Georgian Court responded in the most unlikely of ways in the bottom of the frame as
Alyssa Paradiso, the Lions' #9 hitter, launched a two-out, three-run opposite field homer down the left field line, bringing home Thompson (reached on error) and
Adriana Cortez (walk). The laser beam long ball marked the first of Paradiso's career.
Riding a wave of momentum, GCU would score in each of the next four frames to take a 10-3 lead going into the seventh inning. The Lions took full advantage of five Holy Family miscues, scoring seven unearned runs.
Kristina Morgan improved to 9-7 on the season in 5.1 innings of relief work (2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K).
Rachael Alligood (Jr.-Levittown, Pa.) fell to 5-7 for the Tigers (3.0 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 2 BB).
Taylor McDonough went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI at the dish for GCU. Cortez (1-for-3) also provided a pair of ribbies.
GAME TWO
A McDonough three-run shot in the first inning (her second of the year) of the nightcap was all Georgian Court needed as the Lions cruised to the 3-0 win and the doubleheader sweep.
Deanna Daluise was in full control in the circle for GCU as the junior improved to 9-7 on the year with her third shutout of the season (7th complete game). Daluise permitted just three hits and two walks, while striking out three, en route to the "W".
Sarah Chilutti (So.-Philadelphia, Pa.) dropped to 2-5 with the Holy Family loss.
Justine Mattia (2-for-2, R) and
Briana Molino (2-for-3, R) enjoyed multi-hit games, as did McDonough (2-for-3).
GCU takes to the road Thursday afternoon with another crucial CACC twin-bill this time at Wilmington University. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
