Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University softball squad had no choice but to settle for a spilt in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action Sunday afternoon vs. Bloomfield College. The Lions won Game Two, 5-1, after the Lady Deacons stunned GCU with a five-run seventh frame to steal an 8-7 victory in the opener.
Georgian Court remains at .500 overall (23-23) with a 15-7 conference mark while Bloomfield College goes to 18-17 on the year (10-12 CACC). Both teams keep vying for postseason positions as the Lions currently place fifth while Bloomfield have moved up to the seven-spot in the standings.
GAME ONE
GCU jumped out to an initial 1-0 lead in the first after a soaring high fly off the bat of
Taylor McDonough got lost in the sun and dropped in for an RBI double. The Lady Deacons took a brief 2-1 advantage in the top pf the second, courtesy of a two-run homer to left by
Toni Coleman (Jr.-Port St. Lucie, Fla.).
The Lions tied the affair at 2-2 with a run in the home half of the third on a
Meghan Sfraga sacrifice fly to right before seemingly breaking it open with three runs in the fourth and a two-spot in the sixth to make the score 7-3 GCU.
Things quickly took a turn for the worse for Georgian Court in the bottom of the seventh as the Lady Deacons blasted GCU pitching for five runs on four hits and a crucial error to escape with a crucial conference win.
Brandi Hoffman (Sr.-Clara City, Minn.) started off the onslaught with a towering, one-out home run over the left field foul pole to make it 7-4.
Bloomfield would then load the baseson two singles and a fielder's choice.
Angie Yoshizu (Jr.-Kaneohe, Hi.), who reached earlier on a bunt single, eventually would come in to score on a Georgian Court wild pitch. This then set the table for
Krystina Poloni (Sr.-Pearl River, N.J.) who promptly cleared the bags with an opposite field, three-run shot over the left field fence to complete the improbable comeback for the Lady Deacons.
Ally Schraer (Jr.-Paramus, N.J.) earned the complete-game win for Bloomfield, improving to 9-7 on the season. GCU's
Deanna Daluise dropped to 9-8 with the loss.
Briana Molino paced the Lions' offense with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBI. #Justine Mattia# went 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI.
GAME TWO
There would be no such drama in the nightcap as the Lions plated three runs in the first inning and a pair in the second to coast to the 5-1 victory.
After falling behind, 1-0, in the top of the first, a McDonough RBI single and Sfraga two-run shot to left put Georgian Court up 3-1. A Bloomfield wild pitch brought home
Alyssa Paradiso to make the score 4-1 in the second frame, followed by a Molino sacrifice fly.
Iliana Teran went the distance (7.0 IP, 6 H, 1R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K) to improve to 4-6.
Alexandria Smith (Sr.-Killeen, Tx.) was saddled with the loss for the Lady Deacons.
Molino (2-for-2, 2B, R, RBI) and
Dara Schroeder (2-for-4, R) collected multi-hit efforts for the Lions.
Georgian Court takes to the road for its final six games of the regular season beginning with a doubleheader at Millersville University Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
