Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University softball squad pulled off the improbable Friday afternoon with three victories in three elimination games, defeating #7 Bloomfield College, #3 Wilmington University and #1 Dominican College, to advance to the Championship Round for the first time since 2011.
GCU (31-26) will face #2 Caldwell College Saturday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. on Field #1 at Georgian Court.
Kristina Morgan (16-8) pitched every inning for the Lions, earning the victory in all three, while permitting just two runs in 21 total innings pitched. GCU defeated Bloomfield, 5-1, in the first contest of the day. 2B
Justine Mattia went 2-for-2 with two runs and three RBI, including her team-leading fourth home run of the season. CF
Dara Schroeder also went 2-for-2 with two runs scored.
The Lions plated seven runs on 11 hits to secure a 7-0 blanking of Wilmington in the second game. Morgan scattered five hits and struck out six in her seventh shutout of the year and second of the tournament. Mattia stayed hot at the dish with a 3-for-4 effort, including four runs scored. SS
Briana Molino added a 3-for-4 showing of her own with three RBI and a pair of runs. C
Meghan Sfraga (1-for-4) contributed three RBI.
Georgian Court was in control throughout vs. Domincan in the final game, scoring two in the first and four in the sixth as the Lions coasted to the 7-1 triumph. RF
Vanessa Flores provided the highlight of the day, crushing her first home run of the season, a solo moonshot over the left field foul pole.
