Lions Still in Search of First Conference Victory After 73-61 Setback to Chestnut Hill

Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University men's basketball squad is still in search of its first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory as the Lions dropped a 73-61 decision to the visiting Griffins of Chestnut Hill College Saturday afternoon in the GCU Wellness Center.

The Lions, losers of nine straight, fall to 2-12 (0-7 CACC) in their initial campaign while Chestnut Hill snaps a two-game slide and improves to 5-10 (3-5 CACC).

In a close-scoring first frame, neither team owned a lead of more than three points until GCU's Jordan Wejnert put the Lions ahead, 15-10, with a pair of free throws at 10:00 to go before intermission. An 8-2 push over the next six minutes by Chestnut Hill gave the Griffins a slim 18-17 advantage with 4:00 on the clock.

A Wejnert jumper reclaimed a 19-18 lead for GCU at 2:33, before two free throws by Filip Sekulic (Jr.-Danilovgrad, Montenegro) concluded a 6-0 Griffins run, providing the visitors a 24-19 lead with 0:52 remaining before the half. The Lions would score the final four points of the stanza, highlighted by a Wejnert slam dunk at the buzzer to make the score 24-23 Chestnut Hill going into the locker room.

CHC increased its lead to 28-23 to start the second period before Georgian Court rattled off five straight points to tie the affair with 16:42 remaining after a Lindon Lulgjuraj three-pointer. The Lions sprinted on a 12-2 run to snag a 40-32 surplus at 12:14, capped by a Keith Hughes layup.

The Griffins rallied back with avengence and landed the knockout punch, blistering the Lions with a 22-0 scoring flurry to take an insurmountable, 14-point lead (54-40) with 6:34 to go. A Jakeem Bogans (Sr.-Phladelphia, Pa.) three-pointer at  2:30 to go provided Chestnut Hill with a game-high lead of 68-47, essentially closing the cover on the Griffins' road win.

Bogans topped CHC with 20 points, including a perfect five-for-five from the charity stripe. Seamus Radtke (Jr.-Philadelphia, Pa.) dropped in 14 points, shooting 7-for-10 from the field. Taylor Trevisan (Gr.-West Chester, Pa.) contributed 12 points, to go along with seven boards, four assists, and three steals. Christian Walck (Jr.-Lancaster, Pa.) added 10 points and four assists.   

Wejnert paced all scorers with his 23 points (his seventh effort with 20 or more points this season), shooting 10-for-17 from the field. Jonte Rutty contributed a season-high 13 points while Lulgjuraj popped in 10 of his own. Hughes topped all players with his 11 rebounds and seven assists.

The Lions travel to Wilmington University this Tuesday for its next CACC contest. The Wildcats bested GCU, 69-54, back on December 18 in the Wellness Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
