Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University men's basketball squad squandered a 40-36 halftime advantage as visiting Concordia College owned the second half, 51-30, en route to an 87-70 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory Saturday afternoon in the GCU Wellness Center.
The Clippers, after dropping their first 11 outings of the 2013-14 campaign, improve to 1-11 on the year (1-5 CACC) while the Lions drop to 2-11 overall while still seeking the first conference triumph in program history (0-6 CACC).
Georgian Court jumped out to a quick eight-point lead as a
Keith Hughes three-ball put the home team up 15-7 with 14:18 remaining. A Hughes lay-up at 12:49 maintained the eight-point advantage for the Lions and made the score 17-9.
Doug Soutar's (Sr.-Hartford, Conn.) free throw at 7:48 concluded a Concordia run of 16-8 and tied the affair at 25-all. The Clippers would grow a 32-27 advantage after a
Larry Moore (Fr.-Uniondale, N.Y.) basket at 5:12. GCU countered by outscoring the visitors, 13-4, and proceeded to enter the locker room with a four-point surplus.
Jordan Wejnart's two foul shots with 12:33 left in regulation put the Lions ahead by one (55-54). Concordia immediately answered with an 18-4 spurt over the next five minutes of play giving the Clippers a 72-59 lead. GCU battled back to cut the deficit to 72-65, but that would be as close as they would come as Concordia closed the contest with a 15-5 run over the final 6:07 to seal the deal.
Andrew Peacock (Fr.-Upper Marlboro, Md.) and
Norman Pope (Sr.-Washington, D.C.) each poured in 19 points apiece for the victors while
Rome Jenkins (Fr.-Deer Park, N.Y.) provided 16 points and a team-high nine boards. Pope and
Jamie Holder (So.-Milford, N.H.) each dished a team-best six assists.
Wejnert established a season-high with his game-high 27 points while Hughes tied his best effort of the year with 26 points of his own. Hughes and teammate
Jalen Robinson cleaned the glass with eight rebounds each while
Trey Jones distributed a game-high 10 assists.
The Lions get back at it on Saturday, January 11 with a CACC home game vs. Chestnut Hill College. Tip is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
