Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University tennis team is still seeking its first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory of the year as the Lions were upended by visiting Caldwell University, 5-4, Friday afternoon in the Ellen Mullane Gallagher Tennis Center.
With the win, the Cougars even their record at 4-4 (2-3 CACC) while the Lions slip to 1-8 (0-5 CACC).
In #1 doubles action, the GCU tandem of
Meredith Hoffman (Sr.-Spring Lake, NJ) and
Mafi Leal (Sr.-Guaynabo, P.R.) bested Caldwell's duo of
Rebecca Ryan (Fr.-Berkeley Heights, N.J.) and
Emily Slater (Jr.-Cliffwood Beach, N.J.) by a 9-8 (7-3) score.
Kayanna Chandler (So.-Jackson, N.J.) and
Annmarie Wodell (Sr.-Pt. Pleasant, N.J.) earned an 8-2 victory over the Cougars'
Gwynne Alden (Sr.-Spring Lake Heights, N.J.) and
Sara Riccardi (Jr.-Jersey City, N.J.) at #2.
Caldwell earned its first point in #3 doubles, courtesy of an 8-5 win by
Claudia Romano (Fr.-Salerno, Italy) and
Koumudi Thirunagaru (So.-San Ramon, Calif.) over Georgian Court's
Brittany McLaughlin (Sr.-Mt. Vernon, N.J.) and
Tahira Matthews (Sr.-Bloomfield, N.J.). The Cougars triumphed in the first three singles matches of the day with Ryan (6-1, 6-4 over Leal), Slater (6-2, 6-2 over Chandler), and Gwynne (6-7, 6-4, 6-4) earning wins in the #1, #2, and #3 spots, respectively. Teammate Thirunagaru took down McLaughlin (6-2, 6-1) at #5.
Hoffman defeated Riccardi (6-4, 6-1) to give the Lions a win at #4 while
Deanna Daluise (Sr.-Manalapan, N.J.), in only her second-ever match, earned her first career win as she topped Romano (6-0, 6-3).
Georgian Court will next take the court on Sunday at noon when the Lions travel to Goldey-Beacom College.
