Kroon Carries Lions to Double OT Victory vs. Caldwell as GCU Honors Its Seniors

Lakewood, NJ- On a day that seven Georgian Court University women's soccer seniors were honored in a touching pregame ceremony, it was a freshman who sent the squad home with a victory against Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe, Caldwell University, in a thrilling 1-0, double overtime triumph.

The honorees were Kerry Strohmeier (Manahawkin, NJ), Kaity Hartkopf (Cherry Hill, NJ), Megan Sherman (Mays Landing, NJ), Carly Loverde (Bayville, NJ), Rachael Tremblay (Manalapan, NJ), Jamie Smith (Welland, Ontario) and Farrell Pomponio (Tuckerton, NJ).

With the win, the Lions improve to 10-4-3 (7-3-1 CACC) while the Cougars fall to 8-6-2 (7-3-1 CACC). GCU currently sits as the potential #5 seed in the upcoming CACC Championship Tournament.

The match was evenly played through regulation with each team having their chances, but the scoreline remained 0-0. The first overtime came and went without a tally. In the second overtime, it looked as if the game was going to finish in a draw until GCU forward Lizzy Kroon (Bayville, NJ) took a Tori Capestro (Jr.-Brick, NJ) pass and planted it in the back of the net with just 1:38 left in the game. For Kroon, it was her ninth tally of the year, which is tops among freshmen in the CACC.

The win was credited to GCU goaltender Casey O'Connor (Jr.-Toms River, NJ) as she made four saves to preserve the shutout, her sixth of the season.

Georgian Court will next take the field on Wednesday October 29th for its regular-season finale as they travel to Delaware to face Wilmington University. Kickoff is set for 3:30pm.
