Georgian Court Men Earn First Road Win in Program History with 69-68 Clipping of Clarion University

Shippensburg, Pa.- The Georgian Court University men's basketball squad held on for a 69-68 triumph Saturday afternoon vs.Clarion University on day two of the Wolf Bus Lines, Inc. Classic, hosted by Shippensburg University.

The victory not only was the first of the year for GCU (1-1), but also snapped a 22-game losing streak for the Lions, dating back to 11/26/13, and marked the first-ever road win for the young program (1-13), which commenced its second season Friday evening vs. Shippensburg.

The Golden Eagles (1-1) soared to an early 17-5 advantage with 11:17 remaining in the first half of play. A pair of Jordan Wejnert (Sr.-Pt. Pleasant, N.J.) free throws with 5:12 remaining before intermission concluded a 12-4 run and put the Lions within four at 21-17. Clarion snuffed out the GCU rally by mounting an 8-0 spurt to go ahead by 12 (29-17) with 3:42 left.

After coming out of the break with a 34-26 surplus, the Golden Eagles seemed to be cruising along in the second stanza as Clarion owned a 51-39 lead with 10:20 to go. Georgian Court proceeded to show its mettle at that point as the Lions mounted an incredible 13-0 sprint to take a 52-51 lead with 7:19 left.

It became a game of tit-for-tat for the two opponents as Clarion answered by outscoring GCU, 10-2, over the next 3:12 to go up by seven points at 61-54. Georgian Court continued the bi-polar trend that developed in the second half by tying the game at 65-all with 1:03 on the clock after a streak of 11-4.

A Juwuan Carter (Fr.-Paterson, N.J.) lay-up at 30 seconds before the horn put the Lions ahead for good with a lead of 68-65. Wejnert's free throw at 00:04 concluded GCU's 7-0 run and provided the point that secured the win.

Wejnert matched his uniform number by netting a game-high 23 points, which included an 11-for-14 effort from the charity stripe. The Lions' lone senior also topped the squad with nine boards in 35 minutes. Carter drained 19 points and added team-highs with eight steals and three assists in the victory.

Darius Stevens (Jr.-Gary, Ind.) paced the Golden Eagles with his double-double of 12 boards and 12 points. BJ Andrews (So.-Pikesville, Md.) led Clarion with 17 points. Brandon Williams (Fr.-New Rochelle, N.Y.) dropped in 11 points while Aaron Johnson (Jr.-Moon Township, Pa.) contributed 10 of his own.

The Lions return home to host Queens College (N.Y.) this Monday evening at 7:00 p.m.
