Knights of Queens College Slay Lions with Seven Longballs in Twin-Bill Sweep

Emma Erbig
Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University softball squad, seeing its first competition since returning from the Sunshine State on Sunday, experienced a difficult homecoming as Queens College clobbered seven home runs and 23 total hits en route to a doubleheader sweep of GCU Friday afternoon.

In game one, the Knights (5-5) outlasted the Lions, 14-12, in a nine-inning slobberknocker before blanking the home team, 9-0, in the nightcap.

GAME ONE

It looked pretty paltry for Georgian Court (5-8) in the initial contest as Queens jumped out to a 6-0 lead after 3.5 innings of action. GCU answered by scoring a pair of tallies in the next four frames, including the bottom of the seventh, to ensure extra softball action for the Lions' faithful in attendance. Both clubs plated a run in the eighth inning before the Knights outscored GCU, 5-3, in the ninth frame to secure the victory.

Isabelle Yaroch (Jr.-Annandale, Va.), who lost to GCU last Thursday in Clermont, Fla., achieved redemption on Friday with the victory for Queens (7.1 IP, 13 H, 9 R, 7 ER, 3 BB, 5 K). Georgian Court's Deanna Daluise (2-5) suffered the defeat, yielding 14 runs (9 ER) on 14 hits and five walks in the complete-game effort. She also struck out two batters.

CF Melissa Natale (1-for-5) blasted a lead-off homer to start the affair while 1B Monique Roberge (2-for-3, 4 R, 2 RBI) and DP Kayla Morrissey (1-for-5, 2 RBI) also went deep. RF Nicole Pirretti (4-for-5, 2 R, 3 RBI), C Kaitlyn Crowley (2-for-4, R, RBI) and SS Samantha Mattsson (2-for-5, R, 2 RBI) also posted multi-hit efforts.

As for the Lions C Meghan Sfraga (4-for-5, 3 R, 4 RBI) and 2B Justine Mattia (2-for-5, R, 3 RBI) blasted their first dingers of the year. CF Dara Schroeder (3-for-6, 2 R), SS Briana Molino (3-for-3, R, 3 RBI) and 1B Emma Erbig (3-for-5, 2 R, 2 RBI) registered "trey days" at the plate. RF Alyssa Paradiso (2-for-4, R) provided two hits.

GAME TWO

The nightcap appeared to be a complete contrast to the opening donnybrook, as the game remained scorless for the first four frames. The Knights, however, plated a run in the fifth, six in the sixth, and a pair in the seventh to gallop to the to sweep.

Roberge coasted to the complete-game victory, as the Lions sprayed only four singles and collected four walks off the righty. The junior hurler also sent down five batters by way of the "K". Tina Morgan (3-2) permitted nine runs (8 ER) on nine hits, while striking out four in the loss.

2B Cat Pastor (1-for-4, 3 RBI), 3B Sara Schendel (3-for-4), Morrissey (1-for-4, 2 R), and C Kylie Spillett (1-for-3, 3 RBI) went yard for the visitors. Schroeder, Erbig, Bryana Smith, and Taylor Boltersdorf were responsible for the Lions' four knocks.

It's a quick turn-around for the Lions as they kick off the CACC portion of their schedule Saturday afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. home double-dip vs. Concordia College.
