Softball Suffers Sweep at Adelphi University , 7-4 & 7-0

Garden City, N.Y.- The Georgian Court University softball squad, playing their first true road games of the 2014 campaign, dropped a pair of non-conference decisions at Adelphi University Thursday afternoon. The Lions fell to the Panthers, 7-4 and 7-0, as GCU's record dips to 7-10 on the year.

GAME ONE

The Panthers appeared to be cruising to victory in the opener as Adelphi (6-7) plated a run in both the first and the third and a pair in the fourth inning to take a 4-0 lead. GCU stormed back in the top of the fifth with a four-spot to tie the game, courtesy of a ribbie bases-on-balls by DP Kelly Hardiman, a two-run single to left by SS Briana Molino, and an infield RBI single from 1B Emma Erbig

To the Lions' chagrin, Adelphi immediately answered with three runs in the home half of the fifth, highlighted by a run-inducing infield hit by LF Niki Barbato (Fr.-East Meadow, N.Y.) and a two-run base hit through the left side from C Mary O'Reilly (Jr.-Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.).

GCU left nine on base while collecting 10 total hits. The Panthers also tallied 10 hits, leaving five stranded.

Katie Andrews (Sr.-Dothan, Ala.) improved to 5-4 on the year, earning the victory with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief for Adelphi (3 H, 1 BB, 1 K). Deanna Daluise fell to 3-6 for the Lions, permitting seven runs (7 ER) on 10 hits and two walks. The senior hurler also struck out two.

CF Dara Schroeder provided three hits (3-for-4) and scored a run for GCU. LF Taylor Boltersdorf went 2-for-3 while also plating a run. Adelphi's 3B, Victoria Wink (Jr.-Seaford, N.Y.), topped the home lineup with a 3-for-4 showing, which included a run scored and an RBI.

GAME TWO

Adelphi brought in two runs in the first, one in the second, and four more in the fifth frame as the Panthers strolled to the 7-0 blanking, the second shutout of the Lions this season.

Lindsay Mapes (Fr. Mount Vernon, Ohio) went the distance for the victors, scattering just three hits and striking out four in seven innings. Abby Merryman fell to 1-2 for GCU, allowing seven runs (5 ER) on 10 hits and a lone bases-on-balls in the six-inning effort.

Schroeder, Boltersdorf, and Erbig accounted for GCU's only hits. Barbato went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored for the Panthers. 2B Melaney Reichelt (Fr.-Marshfield, Mass.) also went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

The Lions head right back to Long Island Friday afternoon, this time for a 2:00 p.m. non-conference twin-bill at Dowling College.
