Softball Secures Solid Sweep at USciences, 8-4 and 5-1

Philadelphia, Pa.- The Georgian Court University softball squad improved to an impressive 7-1 vs. conference foes and climbed above the .500 mark for the first time this season (13-12) as the Lions swiped a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contests Monday afternoon at the University of the Sciences, 8-4 and 5-1.

GAME ONE

The Lions opened the day on a positive note, bringing in three first-inning tallies on two hits and two errors by the Devils (3-13, 2-4 CACC). 3B Taylor McDonough and 1B Emma Erbig collected the two RBI in the frame, courtesy of a single by each. USciences answered with two scores of their own in the home-half of the stanza after a run-scoring double from DH Katie Dickson and a ribbie single off the bat of C SamanthaLou Anastasio.

Zeroes decorated the scoreboard until the top half of the fifth when GCU enjoyed another three-run effort, resulting from two run-inducing errors and a RBI infield single from CF Bryana Smith. The Lions broke it open in the top of the sixth with two more runs, making the score 8-2 visitors. USciences brought in two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Georgian Court had the victory secured.

Abby Merryman took the ball for the Lions in Game One, permitting four runs (4 ER) on seven hits and a walk (4 K) in six innings to improve to 4-3 on the year. Cassie Lapotsky suffered the defeat for the Devils as the sophomore yielded seven runs ( 2 ER) on seven hits and three walks over five frames.

Erbig (2-for-4), Smith (2-for-3), RF Alyssa Paradiso (2-for-3, 2 R) and SS Briana Molino (2-for-4, 3 R, RBI) collected two hits apiece.

GAME TWO

After trailing 1-0 after a Devils' run in the home half of the fourth, the Lions brought in a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth innings and one more in the seventh to win the contest running away.

Deanna Daluise (6-6) enjoyed a solid outing in the circle for GCU, allowing just one run (1 ER) on four hits and three walks (1 K) in the complete-game effort. USciences' Nicole Ayers was tagged with the loss after permitting four runs (3 ER) on seven hits and five walks (5 K) in 5.1 IP.

Molino (3-for-4, 2 RBI) peppered the diamond with three doubles while LF Taylor Boltersdorf also went 3-for-4 at the dish.

The Lions return to the home of the cheesesteak Tuesday afternoon for another CACC twin-bill, this time at Holy Family University. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
