Philadelphia, Pa.- Playing its first conference match of the 2014 fall campaign, the Georgian Court University women's tennis team succumbed to host-Chestnut Hill College, 9-0, Tuesday afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action.
The Griffins (1-0, 1-0 CACC) opened the day by sweeping all three doubles matches. Chestnut Hill's #1 tandem of
Iman Williams- Mulesa (Jr.-Pickering, Ontario) and
Charlotte Dawson (Sr.-Odessa, Texas) defeated Georgian Court seniors
Mafi Leal (Guaynabo, P.R.) and
Annmarie Wodell (Pt. Pleasant, N.J.) by an 8-0 score.
Axe Owens (Jr.-Trenton, N.J.) and
Hannah Hills (Fr.-Maize, Kansas) swept
Kayanna Chandler (So.-Jackson, N.J.) and
Meredith Hoffman (Sr.-Spring Lake, N.J.), 8-0, in the second slot.
Mikaela Chua (Sr.-Toms River, N.J.) and
Brittany McLaughlin (Mt. Vernon, N.J.) battled CHC's
Hayley Craskey (Jr.-Aston, Pa.) and
Alexis Puhl (Sr.-Philadelphia, Pa.) in the #3 match, eventually dropping an 8-5 decision.
In #1 singles play, Dawson dropped Leal by a 6-1, 6-0 score, followed by Williams-Mulesa clipping Chandler by the same 6-1, 6-0 mark at #2. Owens overtook Wodell in straight sets (6-4, 6-0) in the third spot, followed by Craskey claiming victory over Hoffman (6-1, 6-3) in the #4 contest. Hills held off Chua (6-1, 6-1) to win at #5.
GCU's McLaughlin, in the match of the day, defeated Puhl in the first set of the #6 offering, 6-4, before eventually being managed (0-6, 2-10) in sets two and three.
The Lions (1-1, 0-1 CACC) return to the court Wednesday afternoon when they host Ramapo College in the Ellen Mullane Gallagher Tennis Center. Start time is slated for 4:00 p.m.
