Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University women's tennis team opened the home portion of its 2014 fall calendar Wednesday afternoon, falling to in-state foe Ramapo College, 5-4, in the Ellen Mullane Gallagher Tennis Center.
The Lions (1-2), after beginning the season with a victory last Thursday, have now dropped two straight contests. The triumph was the fourth straight for the visiting Roadrunners (4-1).
Ramapo snared two of the three doubles matches to start the competition. The Roadrunners' #2 tandem of
Vasundhra Gandotra (Jr.-Bergenfield, N.J.) and
Sabrina Koropchak (Fr.-West Milford, N.J.) topped GCU's
Kayanna Chandler (So.-Jackson, N.J.) and
Meredith Hoffman (Sr.-Spring Lake, N.J.), 8-4.
Katrina Biss (Jr.-Pompton Lakes, N.J.) and
Ivy Schuckman (Jr.-Madison, N.J.) followed with a #3 win over the Lions'
Brittany McLaughlin (Sr.-Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) and
Melissa Williams (Jr.-Egg Harbor Township, N.J.), 8-0.
Georgian Court's lone doubles win came in the #1 spot as
Mafl Leal (Guaynabo, P.R.) and A
nnmarie Wodell (Sr.-Pt. Pleasant, N.J.) held off Ramapo's
Micala Demchak (Jr.-Manalapan, N.J.) and
Sara Luby (Jr.-Ridgewood, N.J.), 8-2.
In singles play, Leal snared a #1 win with a 6-1, 6-2 besting of Luby. Ramapo's Gandorta countered in the #2 match with a three-set victory (6-2, 3-6, 6-4) over Wodell. GCU's Chandler defeated Biss, 6-4, 6-2, in the #3 contest, followed by a 7-5. 7-5 victory by Hoffman over Koropchak in the #4 hole.
Ramapo's
Elena Maria IIieva (Sr.-Sofia) tied the match at 4-4 after her 6-0, 6-0 win over McLaughlin at #5. Demchak earned the deciding point for the Roadrunners with a 6-0, 6-1 win in the #6 position over Williams.
GCU returns to action Saturday afternoon with a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest at Philadelphia University. Start time is scheduled for noon.
