Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University women's tennis squad hosted the University of the Sciences Tuesday afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action, falling to the visiting Devils by a 5-4 score in the Ellen Mullane Gallagher Tennis Center.
The defeat marks the fifth straight for the Lions (1-5, 0-4 CACC) while USciences improves to 7-1 on the year (2-1 CACC), winning four in a row.
In #1 doubles action, the USP tandem of
Teresa Alvarez-Moreno (Fr.-Yorktown, Pa.) and
Victoria Quang (Jr.-Forest Hill, Md.) bested GCU's duo of
Meredith Hoffman (Sr.-Spring Lake, N.J.) and
Mafi Leal (Sr.-Guaynabo, P.R.) by an 8-5 mark.
Kayanna Chandler (So.-Jackson, N.J.) and
Annmarie Wodell (Sr.-Pt. Pleasant, N.J.) evened the score at 1-1 with an 8-1 victory over the
Devils' Allison Korn (Jr.-Laurel Springs, N.J.) and
Anna Vo (Sr.-Harleysville, Pa.) at #2.
USciences was awarded the victory in #3 doubles, courtest of a Georgian Court default.
Owning a 2-1 advantage heading into singles play, the Devils triumphed in #1 and #2 singles with Quang (6-2, 6-1 over Leal) and Alvarez-Moreno (6-1, 6-4 over Chandler) earning wins in the #1 and #2 spots, respectively. #3 Wodell (7-6, 6-0 over Vo), #4 Hoffman (6-2, 6-2 over
Melissa White), and
Mikaela Chua (Sr.-Toms River, N.J.) (6-2, 6-1 over
Andria Dang) each secured a "W" in singles action to knot the overall score at 4-4.
However, it was the road team that headed home victorious as
Sara Skoritowski (Fr.-Scranton, Pa.) held off GCU's
Brittany McLaughlin (Sr.-Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) by a 6-4, 6-0 score in #6 competition.
Georgian Court will next take the court on Tuesday, September 30 when the Lions host West Chester University at 3:30 p.m.
