Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University women's tennis squad succumbed to visiting West Chester University, 8-1, in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon in the Ellen Mullane Gallagher Tennis Center.
The defeat drops the Lions to 1-6 on the campaign while the Golden Rams, playing their first dual match of the fall, improve to 1-0.
West Chester opened match play by winning two of the day's three doubles contests. Concordia's #1 tandem of Maddy Shaak (So.-Myerstown, Pa.) and Claire Uhle (Jr.-Blue Bell, Pa.) shut out Georgian Court seniors Mafi Leal (Guaynabo, P.R.) and Meredith Hoffman (Spring Lake, N.J.), 8-0. Stephanie Cifarelli (So.-Royersford, Pa.) and Amalia Hartman (So.-Cleona, Pa.) topped newcomer Tahira Matthews (Sr.-Bloomfield, N.J.) and partner Brittany McLaughlin (Sr.-Mt. Vernon, N.Y.), 8-0, in the #3 match. Kayanna Chandler (So.-Jackson, N.J.) and Annmarie Wodell (Sr.-Pt. Pleasant, N.J.) earned GCU's lone win on the day, a thrilling 9-7 triumph over WCU's Cassidy Branigan (Jr.-Landsdowne, Pa.) and Alyssa Rees (Fr.-Morgantown, W.V.) in the #2 position.In #1 singles play,Uhle topped Leal by a score of 6-1, 6-1, followed by Shaak dropping of Chandler (6-0, 6-0) at #2. Abriana Nolan (So.-Honesdale, Pa.) dismissed Wodell in straight sets (6-3, 7-5) in the third spot, followed by Branigan claiming victory over Hoffman (6-1, 6-1) in the #4 contest. Rees defeated McLaughlin (6-1, 6-0) to win at #5 before Cifarelli shut out Octivia Booker (So.-Wilmington, Del.) (6-0, 6-0) at #6 to end the match. The Lions next travel to Holy Family University Thursday afternoon for a make-up contest at 3:30 p.m. The match was originally postponed on September 27.
