GCU Men Unable to Keep Pace with Concordia in 76-67 Conference Defeat

Chris Polanco
Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University men's basketball squad, playing its first contest since December 20th, still seeks its first victory in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action as the Lions dropped a 76-67 decision to visiting Concordia College Saturday afternoon in the Wellness Center.

GCU slips to 2-11 (0-7 CACC) as the Clippers improve to 6-7 (3-2 CACC).

Concordia assembled a 21-14 advantage in the first half after a three-pointer by Andrew Peacock (So.-Washington, D.C.) with 11:50 remaining in the stanza. The Lions clawed all the way back with a mighty 11-0 run, capped by a three-ball from Hamilton Capellan (Fr.-Perth Amboy, N.J.) at the 9:18 mark, to take a 25-21 lead.

After a Keith Hughes (So.-Woodbridge, N.J.) jumper put the home team ahead by five (29-24) with 6:23 left before intermission, the Clippers rattled off a 7-2 spurt to tie the contest at 31-31 with just 1:59 to go. The Lions would proceed to outscore Concordia, 5-2, over the remainder of the clock to secure a 36-33 surplus heading into the half.

The Lions came out of the locker room extremely confident, mounting a nine-point lead of 50-41 after a pair of Michael Pierre (Fr.-Melrose, N.Y.) at 15:22. After controlling the first five minutes of the second frame, the Lions proceeded to inject an unwanted solecism of sorts into the contest. Concordia scorched GCU with a 19-2 sprint to secure a 60-52 lead with 11:12 remaining.

Georgian Court refused to go away as the the Lions punished the Clippers with an 11-3 run to tie the game at 63-all with just 4:47 left in regulation. Unfortunately, an improbable 13-0 blanking of GCU put Concordia ahead, 76-63, with just 24 seconds remaining.

Peacock topped the Clips with his 20 points, including 4-for-8 from three-point territory. Tshyrad Oates (Sr.-Union City, N.J.) provided a double-double for the visitors with 18 points and a game-best 11 boards.

Hughes paced the Lions with his 22 points and nine rebounds in 34 minutes. Chris Polanco (Fr.-New York, N.Y.) added 12 points in 24 minutes while Juwuan Carter (Fr.-Paterson, N.J.) poured in 10 of his own.

GCU gets right back to it this Monday evening when the Lions host St. Thomas Aquinas in non-conference action. Tip is slated for 7:00 p.m.
