Lakewood- The Georgian Court University men's basketball team continues its journey to becoming a consistent power in the NCAA Division II East Region but, as a program, they are still in their infancy. Today the second-year program took a huge first step to reaching their goal asthe Lions posted their first win as a member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, 69-67, over Nyack College in front a rambunctious home crowd.
As Georgian Court celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day, the fans were treated to numerous events and activities surrounding the men's basketball contest with Nyack College. The Lions fed off the high-energy of the fans and came out of the gate and roared to a 10-point halftime lead, 41-31. The Warriors battled back in the second half, closing the gap to two points, but were unable to complete the comeback.
For the Lions, senior
Jordan Wejnert (Point Pleasant, NJ) had the hot hand, scoring 21 points on 10-13 shooting from the floor. Keith Hughes (Woodbridge, N.J.) added 16 points, but it was on the defensive side of the ball that won the game for GCU as they recorded 10 blocked shots and seven steals as a team.
Nick Moore was the bright spot for the Warriors as he had a game-high 26 points and 10 rebounds to pace the squad. With the loss, Nyack falls to 5-15 (4-9 CACC) on the season.
GCU (4-15, 1-11 CACC) has a quick turnaround as they have a home makeup game scheduled for Monday against Goldey- Beacom College. Tipoff is set for 8pm in the Wellness Center. The Lions will finish the week on the road against Felician College on Saturday.Â
