New Britain, Conn.- The Georgian Court University softball squad, playing its first contests since returning from Florida almost a week ago, traveled north to take on regional-rival University of New Haven Friday afternoon in a twin-bill that was held at Central Connecticut State University.
The host-Chargers (2-4) coasted to a 10-2, five-inning triumph in the opener before blanking the Lions, 3-0, in the nightcap. New Haven snapped a season-opening, four-game slide with the wins while GCU (1-13) now owns a five-game losing streak.
GAME ONENew Haven garnered a 6-0 lead going into the fifth frame when the Lions plated their only runs of the day, courtesy of an
Alycia Marsello RBI single to center and a run-inducing hit-by-pitch from
Stephanie Grainger. The Chargers countered with a four-spot in the bottom of the inning to abruptly end the game and tally the victory.
Nicole King (Jr.-Front Royal, Va.) improved to 1-2 within the circle in the complete-game effort for the Chargers.
Abigail Merryman (0-1), making her 2015 debut for Georgian Court, was tagged with the loss.
Stefanie Aplin and
JoLei Buonanno provided the other two knocks for the Lions. Marsello's RBI marked her team-leading 14th of the season and places the freshman second among all Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) players.
GAME TWOThe Chargers bookended the second game of the day with two runs in the first and a final tally in the sixth, while holding the Lions to just two hits, for the 3-0 shutout.
Victoria Cabral (Jr.-New Britain, Conn.), pitching in her hometown, wielded a complete-game, two-hit gem that included 11 strikeouts on the day. GCU's Kaitlyn Sorochka (1-6) was the tough-luck loser for the Lions, permitting just two hits and three walks in her six innings of action.
At the plate, Sorochka and
Dara Schroeder were the only Lions to reach via base hit.
Georgian Court returns to the diamond this Thursday when they travel to Adelphi University for a non-conference doubleheader. It will mark the Lions' first visit to Garden City, New York since advancing to the NCAA East 2 Region final last May.
