Lakewood, N.J.- In what was originally to have been a road trip to Adelphi University, the Georgian Court University softball team instead made its 2015 home debut Thursday afternoon, dropping a pair of non-conference contests to the Panthers, 15-1 and 4-2.
GAME ONEAdelphi (3-11) posted crooked numbers all over the scoreboard in the opener, plating four in the first, seven in the fourth, and three in the fifth en route to the 15-1, five-inning drubbing of GCU. 3B
Brenna Martini (Fr.-Fairfield, Conn.) provided the mightiest of the blows with two home runs and five RBI for the Panthers.
Lindsay Mapes (So.-Mount Vernon, Ohio) improved to 1-5 for Adelphi, yielding one unearned run over four innings of action. GCU's
Abby Merryman dipped to 0-2 in the outing.
Dara Schroeder collected two of the Lions' four total hits in the contest and swiped her 14th stolen base of the campaign.
GAME TWOIn contrast to the first game, Georgian Court's
Katie Sorochka and Adelphi's
Jasmine Ennabe (Fr. Carmel, N.Y.) engaged in a quality pitchers' duel as zeroes occupied the first four full innings of action.
The Panthers snapped the stalemate in the top of the fifth frame, plating two runs on a ribbie bases-on-balls by 2B
Danielle Cutuli (So., East Meadow, N.Y.) and a run-inducing fielder's choice off the bat of 1B
Jordan Catalano (Jr.-Merrick, N.Y.).
GCU showed mettle in the bottom of the sixth frame as the Lions scored two runs on three hits, courtesy of an
Alyssa Paradiso RBI two-bagger that rattled off the right-center field fence and a
Kelly Hardiman game-tying single through the middle.
With the score knotted at 2-2, Adelphi's Catalano shut the door on the Lions' comeback as the #2 hitter launched a two-run long ball over the left-center field wall, securing the sweep for the Panthers.
Nicole Camera (Fr.-Metuchen, N.J.) improved to 1-1 in the circle for Adelphi with two scoreless innings of relief. Sorochka falls to 1-7 in the complete-game effort, striking out five batters in the process.
The Lions return to action Saturday afternoon with a home double-dip vs. Dowling College with the first-pitch slated for 1:00 p.m.
