Philadelphia, Pa.- After its dynamic doubleheader sweep of University of the Sciences on Tuesday, the Georgian Court University softball squad picked up right where they left off as the Lions traveled to Chestnut Hill College and proceeded to take two from the Griffins, 3-2 and 10-6 (six innings).
With the victories, the Lions stay perfect (4-0, 5-17 overall) in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play while Chestnut Hill College falls to 2-10 on the season (0-4 CACC).
GAME ONEAfter a scoreless first, GCU scored all of its three runs in the top of the second.
Alycia Marsello walked, advanced to third on a
Kelly Hardiman double and scored on a Chestnut Hill wild pitch. The remaining tallies came in on RBI singles off the bats of
Stefanie Aplin and
Dara Schroeder.
The two teams exchanged zeros for the next four frames as Georgian Court starting pitcher
Abby Merryman had the Lions' first shutout win of the season in her sights. The Griffins would spoil that vision by plating two runs on three hits in the last of the seventh, but GCU would hang on for its third consecutive one-run victory.
Merryman improved to 3-3 with the complete-game effort, permitting six hits and a walk while striking out 10.
Courtney Dayter (Sr.-Cohoes, N.Y.) registered the loss for Chestnut Hill.
Schroeder, who ranks third in the CACC with her .451 batting average, provided a 3-for-4 performance at the top of the GCU lineup. Hardiman (2-for-3) also enjoyed a multi-hit game.
GAME TWOThe Lions got on the board early in the night-cap as a Marsello sacrifice fly and Hardiman ribbie single put GCU ahead, 2-0, before the Griffins stepped to the plate. Chestnut Hill was able to cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the first on a run-inducing fielder's choice.
Georgian Court took a commanding 6-1 advantage, courtesy of a four-run, four-hit outburst in the top of the fourth frame. The inning was highlighted by a bases-loaded, three-run triple from
Alyssa Paradiso. The three-bagger marks the 12th of the senior's career, tying
Rachel Ruch (2009-12) for first in the GCU record book.
Paradiso added two more RBI in the fifth with a double to give the Lions an 8-1 advantage. The home team attempted to keep pace by slicing the lead with two runs in the fifth and three in the seventh, but Georgian Court's two scores in the top of the seventh provided plenty of insurance en route to the sweep.
Katie Sorochka improved to 2-8 in the circle for GCU with the win. Chestnut Hill starter
Kaitlyn Johnson (Jr.-New Boston, N.H.) fell to 1-3 with the loss.
GCU belted 13 hits in the six-inning, rain-shortened contest, led by Paradiso's 3-for-5, five-RBI onslaught. Schroeder (2-for-3, 3 R) and
Taylor Boltersdorf (2-for-3, 2 R) collected two knocks apiece.
The Lions return to the diamond this Saturday with road games at Felician College, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
