Sun Sets on Florida Trip as GCU Softball Closes Week With Setbacks to Merrimack, Shippensburg

Clermont, Fla.- The sun has officially gone down on Georgian Court University's annual journey to Florida as the Lions concluded the 2015 PFX Spring Games Saturday afternoon with regional contests vs. Merrimack College and Shippensburg University.

GAME ONE

The Lions (1-11) trailed Merrimack College, 2-1, after five frames of crisp, efficient softball in Saturday's opening game. The Warriors (3-0) proceeded to pop the wheels of the GCU bus in the top of the sixth inning with eight runs on seven hits, securing the 10-1, 6-inning regional triumph.

Merrimack's Haley Currie (So.-Burling, Mass.) earned the complete-game win in the circle for the Warriors. Katie Sorochka (1-4) suffered the setback for the Lions.

Alycia Marsello (2-for-3, 2B, RBI) and Dara Schroeder (2-for-3, R, SB) highlighted the Georgian Court offense.

GAME TWO

Taking on Shippensburg in the finale, GCU jumped out to an initial 3-0 lead in the top of the first after an RBI hit-by-pitch by Kelly Hardiman, a sacrifice fly off the bat of Stephanie Grainger, and a ribbie base hit, courtesy of Stefanie Aplin.

However, the Raiders (1-0), countered with a pair of runs in the first, second, and fourth frames to take a 6-3 lead. Georgian Court plated a run in the top of the sixth after a Grainger triple and Aplin sac fly to cut the deficit to 6-4, but a Shippensburg three-spot in the bottom of the frame, courtesy of two long-balls, wrapped up the 9-4 win.

Liz Parkins (Sr.-Harleysville, Pa.) went the distance for the Warriors while Sorochka was tagged with the defeat for GCU.

Schroeder (2-for-4, R), Grainger (2-for-2, R) and JoLei Buonanno (2-for-4, R) each contributed multi-hit performances for the Lions.
