Lakewood, N.J.- After starting Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play at a scalding pace of 9-1, the Georgian Court University softball squad has iced over as of late as the Lions were swept by Dominican College Wednesday afternoon by scores of 6-1 and 6-2. The defeats drop GCU to 9-9 in conference play and 10-26 overall.
GAME ONEThe Lions and Lady Chargers (21-13, 13-3 CACC) each plated a run in the initial inning of game one with Dominican snapping the stalemate with a two tallies in the fourth frame, courtesy of an RBI infield single and a run-inducing fielder's choice. A sacrifice squeeze by
Anne Shiebler (Jr.-Wrentham, Mass.) made it 4-1 Dominican in the top of the fifth before the visitors added two more insurance runs in the seventh to seal the win.
Madison Dove (Fr.-Cypress, Calif.) improved to 9-5 on the year for the Lady Chargers, permitting just the lonesome run, scattering seven hits while striking out seven.
Abby Merryman dropped to 6-10 on the season for GCU with the complete-game setback.
Alyssa Paradiso rapped three hits for the Lions while
Stefanie Aplin (2-for-4, RBI) and
Dara Schroeder (2-for-4, R) each managed a pair of knocks.
GAME TWODominican jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead with a run in the first and three more in the second, before increasing the advantage to 6-0 with additional scores in the fourth and sixth frame.Â
The Lions ruined the shutout try by
Jenna Maska (Fr.-Warren, Mass.) with two unearned runs in the last of the seventh. Maska (9-3) went seven innings for the win, permitting four hits and two walks, while striking out three.
Katie Sorochka fell to 4-10 on the year, permitting six runs (3 ER) on eight hits and a walk. The senior also struck out two batters.
 It is now make or break time for the Lions as the CACC Championship Tournament inches closer. GCU sets its focus on Thursday afternoon when they travel to Goldey-Beacom College for a conference double-dip.
