Philadelphia, Pa.-The Georgian Court University women's soccer squad, currently ranked #10 in the latest NCAA East Regional poll, continues to prove their worth as the Lions defeated Holy Family University on the road Tuesday afternoon, 2-1, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action.
The triumph keeps GCU perfect in conference play (5-0, 7-1 overall) and marks the team's seventh straight victory, the longest winning streak in program history since 2000 when the Lions won 10 consecutive contests at one point.
For the fifth straight outing, Georgian Court took an initial 1-0 lead within the first 10 minutes of the game.
Lizzy Kroon, the CACC leader in goals (11) and points (25), increased both columns at 6:07 when the sophomore collected a rebound and popped in the resulting tally.
Lauren Mendez collected her conference-best 5th assist on the play.
It would be nearly 70 minutes until another goal was added to the board. Unfortunately for the Lions, it would come off the boot of a Holy Family player.
Ursula Coyle (Jr.-Philadelphia, Pa.) tied the affair at 1-1 when she headed home an
Ashley Shackleford (Jr.-Burlington, N.J.) feed at 75:43.
The Tigers' goal ended Georgian Court's stretch of five straight shutouts and goalkeeper
Casey O'Connor's personal scorless streak of 561:57!
With the match being far from over, the Lions quickly composed themselves and pounced just 3:11 later (78:54) when
Rachel Marino drilled what would become the game-winner, a blast that popped under the crossbar and dropped behind the line.
Holy Family, after also coming into the match undefeated in CACC action, falls to 4-1 in conference play (5-3 overall).
The Lions outshot HFU, 18-11, and owned a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. O'Connor improves to 7-1 between the GCU posts, collecting four saves in the complete-game victory.
GCU stays on the road and heads out of conference this Thursday with a 4:00 p.m. game at Queens College.
