Bear, Del.- Chaos. This simple, five-letter word may actually be an understatment when describing Tuesday evening's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women's soccer contest between Georgian Court University and the host-Wildcats of Wilmington University.
With the home team gripping a slim 3-2 advantage, the Lions appeared to have pulled of an improbable game-tying tally at the final second of regulation, but the official waved off the goal, stating that the clock had expired before the ball crossed the goal line.
Wilmington (6-4, 5-2 CACC) escaped with the clutch conference victory, but that was not the most newsworthy item to come out of this barnburner of a battle. The setback not only gives GCU its first CACC blemish of the season (7-3, 6-1 CACC), it snaps the Lions' 18-game unbeaten streak (17-0-1) in regular-season conference play. Georgian Court's last loss to a CACC foe came in the regular-season finale of 2014, a 2-1 overtime defeat at .... Wilmington University.
The Lions looked to be on their way to the win column early when
Amanda Astudillo put the visitors ahead, 1-0, at 18:12 with her team-leading fifth goal of the season after a Wilmington turnover. The Wildcats led the attack after that, connecting on three unanswered scoring efforts to take a commanding 3-1 lead with just 11:30 remaining in regulation.
Freshman
Anissia Fucci buried her second of the season to inch GCU to within one at 87:46, which set the stage for the last-second shenanigans.
Reigning CACC Defensive Player of the Week,
Natalie Axelsson, collected three saves in her 90:00 of goalie action for the Lions. Wilmington goalkeeper,
Kierstyn Williams (Jr.-Middletown, Del.) was credited the win, collecting five saves in the process.
Things do not get easier for GCU as they now focus on Saturday's conference match at Post University. The Lions and Eagles take to the pitch at 12:00 p.m.
