Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University women's soccer squad will be appearing in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship Game for the first time since winning the crown in 2010 as the top-seeded Lions slashed its way past #5 Wilmington University, 2-0, in Friday's semifinal round.
Playing on its home pitch, GCU (14-4-1) set the tone immediately when
Kaitlin Lister gathered a
Morgan LaDuca feed and took off for a breakaway goal just 1:08 into the match. For Lister, it marked the freshman's sixth score of the season. The 1-0 advantage would stand until the 76th minute when
Lauren Mendez one-timed a
Lizzy Kroon cross to increase the Lions' surplus, and ultimately secure a session of Sunday soccer for Georgian Court.
Natalie Axelsson, a day after picking up her All-CACC First Team hardware, earned the shutout triumph in the home team's net. The freshman gathered four saves in the victory as she improves to 14-4-1 in her initial collegiate campaign.
GCU owned a slim 10-9 advantage with regards to shots while the Wildcats (11-7) attempted one more corner kick than the victors (5-4).
The Lions now seek their first conference crown in six seasons as the two-time regular season champs look to bring home the conference banner this Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. vs. #2 Caldwell University. It will mark the second straight year these two clubs have faced off in the CACC postseason as the Cougars got the best of Georgian Court in the 2015 semifinal round, 2-1.
Caldwell defeated #6 Holy Family in shootout fashion Friday,4-2, after playing 110:00 of scoreless soccer.
