Clermont, Fla.- The Georgian Court University softball team returned to action Monday afternoon in the PFX Spring Games, dropping a pair of 7-2 decisions to Tiffin University and Ferris State University.
GAME ONE (Boxscore)A five-run second frame consisting of five hits and three GCU miscues proved to be all Tiffin University (2-2) needed in Monday's first contest as the Dragons proceeded to slay the Lions, 7-2.
Georgian Court plated single runs in the sixth and seventh frames, courtesy of RBI singles off the bats of
Kelly Hardiman (1-for-2, BB) and
Alycia Marsello (2-for-3).
Tiffin's
Kimmy Reynolds (So.-Lima, Ohio) earned the win for the Dragons by throwing four shutout innings (3H, 3 BB, 3 K).
Tiffany Snell (Fr.-Toronto, Ontario) went the final three frames (3H, 2 R,1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) to earn the save.
Amanda Finn (0-1), making her first start in the circle for the Lions, suffered the loss (1.1 IP, 3H, 4 R, 1 ER, 1 BB).
GAME TWO (Boxscore)In the night cap, Ferris State scored the game's initial run in the top of the second, courtesy of a Georgian Court infield blunder. The Lions countered with two tallies in the home half of the frame, with one resulting from an overthrow by a Ferris outfielder and the other being plated by a
Bryana Smith infield knock.
The 2-1 GCU advantage marked the Lions' first surplus of the young campaign, but it would not linger as the Bulldogs proceeded to knot the affair in the top of the third with another unearned run.
Ferris plated two more runs in the top of the fifth on a Georgian Court passed ball and a
Sam Bates (So.-Springport, Mich.) RBI single to make the score 4-2 Bulldogs. The victors would then break it open in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs on two hits and two more GCU boo-boos.
Megan Hiler (Jr.-St. Joseph, Mich.) triumphed in the circle for the Bulldogs, permitting two runs (0 ER) on nine hits and walk (4 K).
Megan VanderWal (Sr.-Muskegon, Mich.) provided two innings of scoreless relief (0 H, BB, 3 K), earning the save in the process.
Jessica O'Neil (0-2) went five frames for the Lions, yielding four runs (1 ER) on six hits and three walks (2 K).
Finn and Marsello enjoyed 2-for-4 performances at the dish for the GCU offense.
