Lakewood, N.J.- Drama filled the Georgian Court University Wellness Center as the Griffins of Chestnut Hill College escaped with a 65-64 win at the expense of the hometown Lions. With the victory, Chestnut Hill moves to 6-7 in CACC play (9-12 overall) while GCU falls to 5-16 on the year (4-10 CACC).
The game was a back and forth affair right from the opening tip as the Lions jumped out to an early 7-2 lead. Chestnut Hill came back quickly and the two squads alternated the lead the rest of the half. The Griffins enjoyed a minuscule four-point halftime advantage (34-30). The second half was much of the same as both teams battled to take control of the game. The final was not secured until the final seconds as the Lions held a slim one-point lead with 17 seconds left in regulation. Chestnut Hill's
Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, PA) was fouled driving to the basket and went to the line where he calmly drained both free throws. Georgian Court's
Keith Hughes' shot as time expired fell short and the Griffins were victorious.Â
Juwuan Carter paced the hometown Lions with 18 points and five assists.
Nikola Vujovic put up a double- double with 13 points and 10 boards.
Hamilton Capellan and
Michael Pierre each made their way into double figures with 12 and 10, respectively.
Isaac had 11 points, none more crucial than the two free throws that iced the game, while
Edward McWade (Wildwood, NJ) had a game-high 19 points.
Ryan Griffin (West Friendship, MD) added 13 points for the winning side.
The Lions will next take the court on Saturday February 6th when they travel to North Jersey for a tilt with Bloomfield College.Â
