Rockville Centre, N.Y.- The Georgian Court University softball squad, after playing its initial 12 contests in Florida a week ago, took to the diamond for the first time since its return north with a Wednesday non-conference twin-bill at Molloy College. GCU succumbed to the rival Lions in both contests, 8-5 and 6-0.
GAME ONE (Boxscore)Both clubs exchanged runs in each of the first two frames before the home team broke things open with a four-spot in the fifth and two more tallies in the sixth to take a commanding 8-2 lead. Georgian Court (0-14) made a last-ditch threat with an unearned run in the sixth and two tallies in the seventh (courtesy of RBI doubles from
Kelly Hardiman and
Alycia Marsello), but that is as close as the Lions would get.
Chelsea Hawks (Jr.-Wading River, N.Y.) went 6.1 innings for the victory, yielding five runs (3 ER) on seven hits and three walks while rankling Georgian Court hitters with 10 K's.
Jenna Turato (Fr.-Garden City South, N.Y.) garnered the save with two-thirds of scoreless ball, striking out one in the process.
Angela Lakatos dipped to 0-4 in the circle for GCU, permitting eight runs (8 ER) on 12 hits and three walks. The freshman shined at the dish, compiling a 2-for-3 effort with the bat, which included a run and RBI.
GAME TWO (Boxscore)A three-spot in the home half of the first, along with a pair in the fourth and a lone run in the fifth, accounted for all of Molloy's (4-4) scoring as the host-Lions cruised to the 6-0 blanking of GCU in the nightcap.
Tracey Balinskas (Sr.-Edison, N.J.) pitched 6.0 innings of three-hit ball, walking one and striking out three in the winning effort.
Jessica O'Neil (0-5) lasted 4.0 innings for GCU, allowing five runs (4 ER) on 10 hits and two bases-on-balls.
Georgian Court will kick off the CACC portion of its schedule this Saturday with a 2:30 p.m. conference doubleheader at Nyack College.
