Orangeburg, N.Y.- The Georgian Court University softball squad finally cracked the code for entry to the win column as the Lions split a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contests at Nyack College Saturday afternoon.
GCU (1-15, 1-1 CACC) defeated the Warriors in the opener, 2-1, needing nine frames to do so, before falling to the home team, 4-1, in the nightcap.Â
GAME ONE (Boxscore)Georgian Court and Nyack (2-12, 1-1 CACC) played five scoreless frames in the first game of the day before the Lions attacked first with a tally in the top of the sixth, courtesy of an RBI single off the bat of starting pitcher,
Angela Lakatos.
Nyack countered immediately in the home half of the inning after a two-out single to center by catcher
Katie Lupinacci (Fr.-Bordentown, N.J.) tied the affair at 1-1.
The two foes, with sweaty palms, levigated their bats through two more empty innnings before
JoLei Buonanno brought home
Taylor Boltersdorf from third base with the game-winner after laying down a ribbie bunt single.
Lakatos, with her second extra-inning complete game of the young season (3/3 vs. Lake Erie), permitted the lone Nyack run (1 ER) on four hits and four walks (2 K) in 9.0 IP for her first collegiate triumph (1-4).
Kim Yano (Sr.-Blauvelt, N.Y.) matched her counterpart by also hurling nine frames, yielding the two tallies (1 ER) on eight hits and three walks (7 K).Â
Lakatos, along with
Stefanie Aplin and Boltersdorf, registered multi-hit efforts at the dish for GCU.
GAME TWO (Boxscore)The Warriors deposited a pair of runs in both the first and fourth innings of the nightcap as the home team cruised to the 4-1 conference victory.
Buonanno accounted for the Lions' only RBI, resulting from a sixth--inning triple that brought around Lakatos from first base (single).
Kylie Brase (So.-San Diego, Calif.) went the distance for the Nyack win, allowing the one run (1 ER) on five hits (4 K). GCU's
Jessica O'Neil (0-6) was tagged with the loss (6.0 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 6 H, K).
Georgian Court makes its 2016 home debut Sunday at noon with a non-conference set vs. Queens College.
