Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University softball squad, making its 2016 campus debut Sunday afternoon, secured its second split in as many days in a non-conference double-dip vs. visiting Queens College (NY).
The Knights (2-5) knocked off the home team by a 7-1 margin in the opener but Georgian Court's hopes were not deterred as the Lions, behind the efforts of
Amanda Finn, secured a 7-0 victory in the nightcap, the first shutout for GCU (2-16) this season.
GAME ONE (Boxscore)Queens tallied a pair of runs in the second, fourth, and fifth frames, developing an initial 6-0 advantage that would never be in jeopardy. GCU's lone run came in the home half of the sixth on an RBI ground out to second base off the bat of
Stefanie Aplin, which plated
Taylor Boltersdorf (infield single) from third base.
ToniMarie Valeriano (So.-Bellmore, N.Y.) went the distance for the Knights in the circle to earn the win, permitting one run (1 ER) on four hits while striking out eight Lions.
Kelly Hardiman dropped to 0-2 in the setback, allowing two runs (0 ER) on a hit and three free passes.
Hardiman did provide two of GCU's four hits, however, one of which included a two-bagger to left-center.
GAME ONE (Boxscore)The Georgian Court offense appeared revitalized in the second contest of the day, posting three runs in each of the fourth and fifth frames en route to the seven-run, 11-hit onslaught.Â
Starting pitcher
Amanda Finn got things going in the second inning when the slugger deposited a 1-2 pitch over the left field fence for the sophomore's first dinger as a Lion. GCU increased its surplus to 4-0 in the home half of the fourth, courtesy of a two-run single to center by
Caroline Abin and a run-inducing knock through the left side off the bat of
Brianna LaFiura.
The Lions capped the quality triumph with three more runs in the fifth. Finn (3-for-3) came up clutch with an RBI single up the middle, followed by two unearned notches to make the score 7-0.
Finn scattered six hits and walked a pair (1 K) to earn the hurler her first win of the season (1-4). Queens' starter,
Lauren Pascual (Fr.-Woodland Hills, Calif.), suffered the defeat (3.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, BB, 5 K).
Aplin (2-for-4) and Boltersdorf (2-for-3) also enjoyed mulit-hit performances for GCU.
The Lions take to the road this Tuesday with a non-conference doubleheader at Adelphi University. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
