Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University men's lacrosse squad, playing the sixth of seven straight home contests, suffered a 19-9 defeat at the hands of St. Michael's College Tuesday afternoon on the GCU campus.
In a match-up pairing two hungry teams each looking for its first victory of the campaign, it was the Purple Knights that prevailed and filled its win column first (1-4). The Lions slip to 0-8.
The first period seems to be when GCU is at its most farraginous as the SMC attack compiled an 8-1 advantage after the initial 15:00 of action. The Purple Knights piled on two more tallies two start the second, increasing their lead to 10-1. Scores from
Cory Boyle and
CJ Francisco followed to cut the Lions' deficit to 10-3 with 6:12 remaining before intermission.
The Lions came out of the break ready to pounce as
Joseph Ramirez found the back of the visitors' net just 13 seconds into the third, making the score 12-4 SMC. The Purple Knights, unfortunately for Georgian Court, chose this time to wield their daggers as Saint Michael's fired off six unanswered goals to take a commanding 18-4 lead with 1:59 remaining in the stanza.
GCU showed some mettle to close out the contest, rattling home five straight tallies to cut the deficit to 18-9 with 10:27 to go in the game.
Brian Loughlin (So.-Kingston, N.Y.) shined for the SMCÂ offense, registering three goals and five assists.
Patch Ryan (So.-Holden, Mass.) contributed a hat trick of his own to the victory for the road team.
