Philadelphia, Pa.- The Georgian Court University softball squad secured a doubleheader split Wednesday afternoon, ending a four-game slide in the process, as the Lions traveled to the University of the Sciences for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) twin-bill.
GCU triumphed in the opener, 6-4, behind the bat and arm of
Angela Lakatos before slipping in the nightcap, 4-3. The Lions now own a mark of 3-21 (2-4 CACC) while the Devils stand at 4-15 (2-4 CACC).
GAME ONE (Boxscore)A first-inning, three-run double from
Alycia Marsello and a three-run long ball off the bat of Lakatos in the top of the fifth provided Georgian Court a seemingly comfortable 6-1 advantage. However, the Lions have shown a propensity this season to give away large leads, which made the bottom of the sixth somewhat nerve-wracking for the visitors. Â
The Devils opened the frame with a triple, hit by pitch, single, and sacrifice fly to plate two runs with just one out. USciences would proceed to bring another run across, courtesy of a GCU miscue, but Lakatos would end the Devils' surge with a backwards "K" to escape the inning.
Lakatos would yield four runs (3 ER) on seven hits and a free pass (1 K) in the complete-game victory. Her three-run homer was the first of the freshman's collegiate career.
Kaitlyn Gaynor (Fr.-Berlin, N.J.) suffered the defeat for the Devils, permitting six runs (6 ER) on eight hits and a walk (2 K).
The GCU offense pounded out 12 hits in the win, including multi-hit efforts from
Caroline Abin (2-for-4, R),
JoLei Buonanno (2-for-4, 3B),
Kelly Hardiman (2-for-4, 2 2B, 2 R) and Marsello (2-for-4).
GAME TWO (Boxscore)The Lions picked up right where they left off as the road team plated two in the first, courtesy of an Abin RBI single and a Devils' error, and another in the third (Lakatos RBI groundout) to take an initial 3-0 lead.Â
Unfortunately for Georgian Court, the Devils were able to complete the comeback this time as USciences scored four unanswered tallies over three frames to secure the come-from-behind home win.
Lakatos, after enjoying the taste of victory in the opener, suffered the agony of defeat in the following contest as she was saddled with the loss (2-7) after 1.2 innings of relief (1 R, 1 ER, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K).
Cassie Lapotsky (Sr.-Ashland, Pa.) went the distance to earn the win, allowing three runs (2 ER) on six hits and two walks (4 K).
Abin enjoyed her second two-hit perfromance of the afternoon (2-for-4, 2 R) for the Lions. The junior is currently riding an eight-game hitting streak.
Georgian Court returns home this Tuesday to host Wilmington University at 2:30 p.m. in a CACC doubleheader.
