Lakewood, N.J.- Playing its second home doubleheader in as many days, the Georgian Court University softball squad left it all on the diamond Wednesday afternoon in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) split with visiting Post University. The Eagles soared with a 3-0 shutout in the opener before the Lions clawed back with a 3-1 triumph in the nightcap.
GAME ONEÂ
Two runs in the second and an insurance tally in the seventh was all Post (18-17, 12-4 CACC) needed to secure the victory in game one.
Samantha Esque (Sr.-Springfield, Pa.) did the rest for the Eagles from within the circle, limiting the Lions to just three hits. The Post ace completely shut down the GCU bats, permitting no walks and striking out 10 (including five straight at one point) over seven frames to improve to 14-5 on the year.
Angela Lakatos (3-12) kept GCU in the game, compiling a quality start by permitting the three runs (1 ER) on 10 hits and three free passes (2 K) in the complete-game effort.
GAME TWO
In the nightcap, the Lions battled back with a vengence, chasing Post starting pitcher,
Leslie Denis (Fr.-Swansea, Mass.)Â (4-9) after 1/3 of an inning after pouncing for two runs on four hits in the frame. Lakatos provided both tallies with a two-run single to left.
The Eagles countered with a lone run in the top of the second, but the Lions renewed the breathing space with another digit in the bottom of the third, courtesy of ribbie single to center by
Stephanie Torrence.
It was
Jessica O'Neil's (3-9) time to dazzle as the GCU hurler stifled the Post offense by allowing the lone run (0 ER) on eight hits and a walk (4 K) over seven innings.
Torrence (2-for-2),
Caroline Abin (2-for-3, R) and
Taylor Boltersdorf (2-for-3) each collected multi-hit efforts for the victors.
Georgian Court returns to action Friday morning with an 11:00 a.m., non-conference showdown with the University of New Haven.
