Lakewood, N.J.- The 2016 softball season came to a close for Georgian Court University Saturday afternoon as the Lions dropped a pair to visiting Felician University by the scores of 15-3 (5 inn.) and 8-5 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action.
GCU honored its two seniors,
Stephanie Grainger and
Meghan Sfraga, during a special pregame Senior Day ceremony as the pair suited up in the blue and gold for the final time.
The Golden Falcons (17-29, 10-16 CACC) exploded for 15 runs on 20 hits in the opener to glide to the easy five-inning conference victory.
Ashley Owens (So.-Lockport, N.Y.) went the distance for Felician to earn the win, allowing three runs (2 ER) on six hits while striking out four.
Angela Lakatos suffered the defeat, lasting only one inning (6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, K) in the start.Â
Felician jumped out to a 4-0 advantage after two-and-a-half in the nightcap, but the Lions plated three in the bottom of the third, highlighted by a
Alycia Marsello two-run long ball, to cut the deficit to 4-3.
With the Golden Falcons grasping a 5-4 surplus after five full frames, the visitors added an insurance run in the sixth and two more in the seventh to secure the sweep.
Owens (10-13) registered her second pitching victory of the day for Felician, this time allowing five runs (5 ER) on 10 hits and a walk (4 K) in seven frames.
Jessica O'Neil went six full for GCU, yielding six runs (3 ER) on 12 hits (1 K).
Marsello finished the season swinging a might stick as the sophomore slugger went 3-for-4 with four RBI to push her average to .306 to conclude the year.
Bryana Smith added a 2-for-4 Â effort with a two-bagger and two runs scored.
